About the role

Aboriginal Field Officers are the first point of contact for many Aboriginal people who come into contact with the Criminal Justice system. The role of Aboriginal Field Officers is to provide support and para-legal advice to Aboriginal people who are detained in police or prison custody or who are attending court. Aboriginal Field Officers are required to maintain strong links with Aboriginal communities and to assist Aboriginal people to become more aware of their legal rights and responsibilities in relation to the law. Aboriginal Field Officers also inform senior staff of problems and issues that arise in Aboriginal communities throughout South Australia. The promotion of ALRM and guest speaking is also a role undertaken by Aboriginal Field Officers.

Key responsibilities

- Role model politeness and professional communication when dealing with clients and the general public

- Work as part of a team including other Aboriginal Field Officers, the Custody Notification Service (CNS) staff, legal and support staff

- Work to ensure the provision of a culturally competent and responsive service to clients

- Provide referrals to services in accordance with ALRM objectives

- Maintain IT requirements including database statistics, and email

- Enter and maintain the Client Management System (CMS) database

- Provide in-person support at police stations as requested through the Custody Notification Service (CNS)

- Remind clients of their legal rights, especially of their right to remain silent during interviews

- Support and sit in with clients on police interviews, DNA procedures, and Forensic Procedure Hearings

- Interview and take statements from clients in relation to their legal matters

About you

- Demonstrated knowledge of the criminal legal system and its impact upon Aboriginal people





- Comprehensive understanding of the issues confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to legal services and in the wider community

- Demonstrated commitment to productive and effective service delivery and a commitment to a client-centred focus

- Ability to manage and balance priorities in an environment of high workloads

- Good communication skills

- Ability to demonstrate strict adherence to privacy laws and maintain client confidentiality

About us

The central object of the Movement is to assist Aboriginal people (especially those detained in custody or imprisoned) to relieve their poverty, the consequences of their dispossession and social misfortune and to assist further in removing destitution and helplessness amongst Aboriginal people through the use of the legal system of the State of South Australia and the Commonwealth of Australia.

Further information

Applicants must have a Working With Children and National Police check, or be willing to obtain them. Applicants must also have an unrestricted current driver's licence and feel confident to drive off road vehicles (training will be provided).

Successful candidates will be required to attend prisons, SAPOL sites and client homes, both during normal work hours and after hours and on weekends.

It is desirable that applicant have a demonstrated knowledge of the criminal legal system and its impact upon Aboriginal people; be able to work collaboratively as a team member; maintain strict confidentiality; demonstrate a commitment to delivering culturally appropriate services.
