What's the role?
As the Corporate Legal Counsel, you will provide relevant, strategic, and actionable legal support across the News Corp Australia business. You will oversee critical matters such as regulatory compliance, contract negotiation, and rights management. You will achieve this by working closely with the Chief General Counsel and engaging with executives, senior leadership, and regulators to drive our broader business objectives.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic, actionable legal support and advice to various business units to help deliver key projects and initiatives.
- Oversee regulatory compliance, content licensing, company secretarial matters, and general contract drafting and negotiation.
- Apply an internal commercial overlay to external advice, ensuring it aligns with the business imperatives and objectives of News Corp Australia.
- Identify legal risks and issues, offering practical, commercially appropriate solutions to manage and mitigate them effectively.
- Collaborate closely with the broader Legal Team, assisting with crossover work and providing procurement-related advice.
- Maintain strong relationships and independence to protect the organisation's legal position while engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators.
Who are you?
- You hold a Bachelor's degree and are qualified to practice as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction, holding or entitled to hold a current practising certificate.
- You bring 2-3+ years of post-qualification experience, ideally featuring a mix of private practice and in-house experience.
- You possess excellent communication and legal drafting skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex legal concepts to diverse audiences.
- You demonstrate robust verbal reasoning skills to accurately interpret the precise meaning of contracts, legislation, and case decisions.
- You are a confident negotiator and influencer who steps up to address difficult issues openly and instils trust through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.
- You combine deep commercial and business acumen with a strategic mindset, making good and timely decisions that keep the organisation moving forward.
