Health Safety and Wellbeing Advisor/Consultant

Location: Clayton Campus (with occasional travel to other campuses)

Contract Type: Casual - Initial 6-month engagement

Classification: HEW 7 or 8 (based on experience)

Hours: 36.75 per work cycle

Pay: Attractive hourly rate + 25% casual loading + 12% superannuation

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor / Consultant to provide hands‑on, people‑centred safety support across complex laboratory, research, teaching, and operational environments. This is not a desk‑based compliance role—it’s a boots‑on‑the‑ground position , focused on visibility, trust, and practical engagement. You’ll work closely with academic and qualified staff to strengthen safety culture, improve risk understanding, and support well‑being outcomes across STEM environments.

Key Responsibilities
Act as a trusted HSW business partner to faculties and departments.
Build solid relationships with academic leaders, researchers, and lab teams.
Conduct risk assessments and support incident investigations.
Apply Safety‑II principles , focusing on how work is actually performed.
Deliver pragmatic, solutions‑focused advice across chemical, biological, and physical hazards.




Support hazard identification, risk controls, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Assist with audits, inspections, and safety communications.
Travel to multiple campuses as required.

Skills & Experience
3‑5 years experience in WHS advisory or partnering roles.
Experience in complex, high‑risk environments such as:
Biomedical or life sciences organisations
Universities, hospitals, or research institutes
Strong understanding of Safety‑II principles and stakeholder‑led safety approaches.
Proven ability to build trust and influence without authority.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Comfortable working in dynamic environments with competing priorities.

Desirable
Tertiary qualification in HSW or related discipline.
Experience within higher education or research settings.
Understanding of psychosocial risk and wellbeing frameworks.
