Help empower renters facing financial hardship
Tenants Queensland is seeking a skilled and values-driven Financial Counsellor to join its team in Spring Hill, Brisbane. This is a meaningful prospect to support residential renters who are experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship and tenancy instability.
In this role, you will provide tailored and specialist financial counselling services to help renters better understand their financial position, strengthen their self-advocacy, and reduce the risk of tenancy failure. You will also contribute to community education, internal capability building, and broader law reform and policy work that improves outcomes for Queensland renters.
This role would suit someone who combines robust technical financial counselling capability with compassion, professionalism and a deep commitment to social justice.
About Tenants Queensland
Tenants Queensland was established in **** and works to represent the interests of Queenslanders who rent their home, including those living in more marginal tenures such as caravan parks and rooming accommodation.
The organisation is recognised for providing specialist advisory services to renters, advocating on their behalf, and working to secure improvements to Queensland's residential tenancy laws. Tenants Queensland plays an important role in supporting people to remain informed, empowered and connected to the right services during times of housing and financial stress.
About the role
The purpose of this role is to financially empower renters by providing high-quality, specialist financial counselling services to residential renters experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship. The role is designed to integrate closely with Tenants Queensland's tenancy advice and legal services, supporting a more holistic response to renters' needs.
This position will involve delivering direct client support, developing referral and intake processes, contributing to community education resources, supporting internal worker capability, and helping identify systemic issues that can inform policy and law reform.
Key responsibilities




deliver high-quality financial counselling services to residential renters from diverse backgrounds
establish and support an integrated referral and service delivery model within the organisation
undertake financial assessments to understand clients' financial needs, goals, strengths and challenges
assist clients to self-advocate with creditors and service providers, including utility providers
advocate on behalf of prioritised clients where required
support the prevention of tenancy failures and mitigation of financial hardship
develop tools, resources and community education materials to support renters' financial wellbeing
contribute to internal training and worker capacity building
collect data and support monitoring and evaluation of the financial counselling program
identify recurring issues affecting renters to inform educational responses, law reform and policy development
maintain skilled and ethical standards of the financial counselling profession
undertake associated administrative duties and records management

highly developed
financial counselling skills
strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate and advocate on behalf of clients
the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders from a range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
highly developed verbal and written communication skills
strong computer literacy and confidence using client databases and records systems
the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Essential requirements
Diploma of Financial Counselling (CHC*****)
three to five years' experience delivering financial counselling services
eligibility for membership of the




Financial Counsellors' Association of Queensland
commitment to the principles of social justice
understanding of, or demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of:
Queensland tenancy laws
financial counselling services
the community services sector
