As a Telecommunications Automation and AI Engineer, you'll help transform the way TasNetworks manages and operates its telecommunications network. Leveraging automation, AI and orchestration technologies, you'll deliver smarter, more efficient ways of working that improve service reliability, reduce manual effort and support better outcomes for customers and the business.

Working closely with internal engineering teams and our telecommunications partner, 42-24, you'll identify opportunities to streamline processes, enhance network operations and progress our journey towards greater network autonomy. You'll combine technical expertise with a continuous improvement mindset to deliver practical solutions that are safe, efficient and sustainable.

What you'll do:

- Design, build and support AI-driven automation, orchestration solutions and workflows that improve network operations and service delivery.
- Maintain telecommunications operational support systems to ensure performance, availability and service levels are achieved.
- Investigate and resolve automation-related faults, exceptions and system issues to support reliable network operations.
- Partner with internal stakeholders and 42-24 to identify, develop and implement automation opportunities across the telecommunications environment.
- Develop technical documentation, reporting and performance insights to support system governance, continuous improvement and operational decision-making.
- Coordinate system upgrades, maintenance activities and platform changes to maintain the integrity and reliability of critical services.

About you

You're a curious and solutions-focused professional who thrives on solving complex technical challenges. With a strong ability to apply sound technical judgement and logical analysis, you can translate intricate workflows and business problems into practical, innovative automation and AI solutions. You enjoy learning new technologies, concepts and systems, and bring a proactive, can-do attitude that helps drive continuous improvement and positive outcomes.

You are an effective communicator who can build trusted relationships across both technical and business teams. Able to work independently while managing competing priorities, you combine excellent organisational skills with a collaborative mindset. Your enthusiasm, adaptability and commitment to delivering results make you a valuable contributor in a fast-paced and evolving telecommunications and technology environment.

You'll bring:

- Relevant technical certifications in automation, AI, RPA, or telecommunications technologies, including qualifications from leading platforms and vendors such as Microsoft, Cisco, Ciena, or equivalent industry-recognised certifications.
- Proven hands-on experience with automation, AI and agentic orchestration technologies, including workflow automation, AI/MLOps environments, agent development platforms, and RPA solutions such as Microsoft Power Automate and Zapier.
- Experience with telecommunications OSS/NMS platforms (e.g. IBM Netcool, Ciena MCP, Cisco network management systems) and network telemetry/integration protocols (e.g. SNMP, NETCONF/YANG, REST APIs for network elements) is highly regarded.
- Demonstrated ability to write and maintain operational scripts (e.g. Python, JavaScript, PowerShell or VBA) to extend tool capabilities and handle complex data transformations.
- Demonstrated ability to apply accurate technical judgement and logical analysis of complex technical workflows and business problems.
