We’re looking for a hands-on Senior BI Developer to join a data and analytics team within the insurance sector.
This is a genuine hybrid role combining advanced SQL/data development with Power BI reporting. It would suit someone who enjoys getting underneath the data, understanding how it works, solving problems and then taking that information through into clear, useful reporting.
You won’t simply be handed a clean dataset and asked to build dashboards. You’ll work across the full BI lifecycle — investigating data, writing and debugging SQL, building or enhancing data assets, validating outputs and delivering reporting through Power BI.
What you’ll be doing
- Work roughly 50% across SQL/data development and 50% across BI/reporting
- Write complex SQL within a Microsoft SQL Server workplace
- Develop and maintain stored procedures, transformations and data models
- Pick up existing SQL and code, understand how it works, debug issues and make improvements
- Build and enhance curated datasets and data assets used for reporting
- Investigate data quality issues and validate reporting outputs
- Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports
- Deliver operational, management and executive-level reporting
- Work across areas including customer service, finance, sales and core operational reporting
- Partner directly with business stakeholders to understand problems and determine the right reporting or data solution
- Occasionally investigate broader solutions, including areas such as HubSpot automation or integration
- Maintain strong documentation, governance and development controls
What we’re looking for You’ll ideally have:
- Strong commercial experience in BI development, analytics development or a similar role
- Advanced SQL skills
- Strong Microsoft SQL Server experience
- Experience with complex SQL, stored procedures and data transformations
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills
- Experience working with and modifying code developed by other people
- Data modelling and data asset development experience
- Strong hands-on Power BI capability
- Experience delivering reporting from the underlying data through to the finished dashboard
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to investigate data rather than simply visualise it
- Experience working directly with business stakeholders
- Confidence delivering reporting for senior or executive audiences
- Good documentation, governance and data quality practices
Experience within insurance or financial services would be highly regarded, particularly if you already understand insurance terminology and concepts.
AI-assisted development The team is also interested in people who are comfortable using modern AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar tools.
You don’t need to be an AI specialist, but you should be able to demonstrate how you use AI to support development while still applying appropriate human validation, testing, documentation and governance.
What you don’t need This is not a traditional cloud Data Engineering role.
You do not need deep experience with:
- Python
- Azure engineering
- Databricks
- Azure Data Factory
- Microsoft Fabric
- Building data ingestion pipelines
- Google Analytics
The underlying data is already available. The focus is on understanding it, shaping it with SQL, validating it and turning it into high-quality reporting and insight.
The ideal profile You’re someone who can comfortably move between:
Business problem → data investigation → SQL development/debugging → data asset → validation → Power BI → business insight
If you’re a strong SQL and Power BI developer who enjoys owning BI solutions end to end and working closely with the business, this could be a great next step.
