About the opportunity

The Western Cancer Centre Dubbo is seeking to expand the Rural & Remote Haematology Service through the appointment of a part-time Clinical Haematologist. The appointment will bring the service to a total of four haematologists working collectively at 3.0 FTE in Clinical Haematology as well as 0.2FTE in Laboratory Haematology. We provide care to some of the most rural and remote patients across western New South Wales through a predominantly outpatient clinic-based service. The service is based at Dubbo, with outreach clinics to Mudgee, Coonabarabran, Walgett, Bourke and Cobar, as well as telehealth consultations across the district.

Clinical duties will include outpatient clinics, bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, administration of intrathecal chemotherapy, sharing the consult roster during working hours, as well as participation in the district-wide after-hours on-call roster for massive transfusion. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a sound understanding of rural & remote medicine and will be offered the opportunity to take up the outreach clinic to Cobar District Hospital. Flights to and from Dubbo are supported by the NSW Government's Rural Aerial Health Services (RAHS) programme. Travel across the district is an expected part of the role.

We participate in weekly MDT and journal club meetings with the haematology service at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and are supported by a fortnightly visiting roster of RPA haematologists. RPA is our primary referral centre for acute leukaemia, bone marrow transplantation and CAR T-cell therapy. There is also a monthly district-wide Morbidity & Mortality meeting with the haematologists at Orange and Bathurst. Attendance at the monthly Dubbo Physicians' Meeting, Morbidity & Mortality Meeting, and bi-monthly Medical Staff Council meeting is expected. In person attendance is preferred with virtual attendance an option.

Dubbo Base Hospital is affiliated with the School of Rural Health, University of Sydney. Involvement in teaching and supervision of the medical students is encouraged and there is the opportunity for academic appointment as a Clinical Lecturer with the university. Research opportunities will be available and supported.

Successful candidates may be able to seek an Academic/Teaching/Research role with one of our three partner Universities in the District being University of Sydney for Dubbo Health Service, Charles Sturt University for Orange Health Service and Western Sydney University for Bathurst Health Service. To enquire about available opportunities, please reach out to the relevant Head of Clinical School.
