This is a permanent full-time role. Its purpose is to provide exceptional making, repairs and restoration services to violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows at our Chatswood location.
Key Responsibilities
- Quote for and complete repairs and restoration work on customers' string instruments including:
- Gluing cracks and open seams
- Patching and repairing cracks using established methods
- 'Touching Up' varnish
- Replacing bridges, sound posts, nuts and fingerboards
- Complete specialised repairs and restoration work on stock instruments
- Liaise with suppliers as necessary to obtain parts needed to complete repairs and restoration work
- Perform 'set ups' on stock instruments including:
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a bridge
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a sound post
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a fingerboard and fingerboard nut
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting pegs
- Perform key tasks in the manufacturing of recent instruments,
which in addition to the above 'set up' tasks include:
- Cutting and fitting bass bars
- Thicknessing the top and back plates
- Building ribs and fitting them to the top and back plates
- Cut and fit a neck, peg-box and scroll
- Repairs and restoration to bows including:
- Re-lapping
- Provide advice to customers about their existing instruments, which may be antique or recently made
- Co-ordinate with sales staff
- Organise and provide specialised training to junior team members
- Maintain a safe and tidy workspace
Skill & Experience
The ideal candidate would have industry experience and/or a qualification from one of the following schools:
- The Cremona International School of Violin Making
- The Chicago School of Violin Making
- The Mittenwald School of Violin Making
- The Markneukichnen School of Violin Making
- The North Bennet Street School, Boston
