Company description:

As an organisation we have a clear focus on how we service and partner with our community, including our strategy of helping the community stay well when at home. Our reputation of community minded, inclusive and progressive is matched to none.

Job description:

Northern Health are seeking applications from a motivated and suitably experienced early- to mid-career Clinical Data Developer to join the VIC-HIVE / Clinical Digital Innovation team.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne's rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals Centres and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About the Role:

This role is a technical position within the Clinical Digital Innovation team, supporting the establishment of a clinical analytics database— that will underpin research, quality improvement, and clinical analytics at Northern Health.

The successful candidate will work directly under the supervision of the Director, Clinical Digital Innovation, who provides informatics leadership and clinical governance oversight for the programme.

The core technical workflow involves extracting data from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) via ODBC connections, loading it into the local Data Warehouse (DWH), pushing to AWS S3 cloud storage, and transforming data into a simplified OMOP common data model.

This is a hands-on data pipeline role: the right candidate is comfortable working with real-world messy health data, has a methodical approach to data quality and documentation, and is willing to learn health informatics concepts on the job with mentorship and informatics leadership.

This role does not require prior experience in clinical informatics or OMOP — structured mentorship and informatics leadership are provided.

What matters is strong foundational data skills,

a curious and accountable approach to work, and a genuine interest in using data to improve patient care.

The role sits within the VIC-HIVE / CMO office, classified at HS Grade 5-6 (commensurate with experience), and is available full-time (1.0 EFT) for 12 months.

To be successful in this role you will have:

- Solid working knowledge of SQL, including writing queries, joins, and basic transformations against relational databases — this is the primary day-to-day skill for the role
- Working knowledge of Python for data processing tasks (e.g. pandas-based ETL scripts, file handling, basic automation); evidence of applied, real-world project use is valued but not essential
- Familiar with extracting data from source systems via ODBC connections, and handling binary/BLOB data
- Familiarity with cloud storage concepts, particularly AWS S3 (uploading, downloading, bucket and folder structure, basic IAM/permissions awareness); direct hands-on experience is desirable but structured training can be provided
- Understanding of data warehousing principles — staging vs. curated data layers, incremental vs. full loads, and the importance of data lineage and transformation documentation
- Demonstrated attention to data quality: understands that missing, duplicate, or poorly coded data is the norm in clinical systems, and approaches data cleaning with rigour and documentation
- Comfortable using AI coding and productivity tools (e.g. Claude Code) in a responsible, transparent, and accountable manner — understands their strengths and limitations and reviews AI-generated output before relying on it
- Understands the data structures, formats, and quality norms required to support AI and machine-learning modelling — and how upstream data decisions affect downstream model reliability

- Reliable and accountable: follows through on assigned tasks, seeks clarification proactively, documents work clearly, and takes responsibility for testing outputs before handover
- Familiarity with healthcare data models and standards such as ICD-10 or OMOP are desirable but not required
