YOUTH ACTIVITIES WORKER
Casual | Up to 27 hours per week | $49.41 per hour + applicable shift penalties | Ipswich
CREATE EXPERIENCES. BUILD CONNECTIONS. OPEN UP OPPORTUNITIES.
Are you the kind of person who can walk into a group of young people, build rapport and get them involved?
Do you have the creativity to turn an idea into an activity young people actually want to be part of?
ICYS is looking for a Youth Activities Worker (ICYS PD_Activities Worker v1.pdf) who can bring energy, creativity and strong youth engagement skills to our team.
This isn't a desk-based role.
One week you might be planning a school holiday activity or community event. Another might see you supporting a group of young people to access sport, recreation or other positive experiences. On Tuesday evenings, you'll join our after-hours Street Outreach team, engaging young people where they're at and helping connect them with safe, positive alternatives.
At the heart of the role is one simple idea: positive experiences and positive relationships can create opportunities for young people.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Based at the ICYS Ipswich Youth Hub, the Youth Activities Worker will design, plan and facilitate weekly activities, school holiday programs and community engagement opportunities for young people accessing ICYS services and across the wider Ipswich, Somerset and Lockyer Valley communities.
Importantly, activities aren't simply planned for young people. You'll listen to their ideas, interests and feedback and use these to help create programs that are relevant, engaging and meaningful.
You'll also work as part of ICYS' after-hours Street Outreach team, supporting groups of young people to access pro-social activities designed to strengthen connection, promote wellbeing and divert young people from involvement with Police and the youth justice system.
The role is casual, up to 27 hours per week, and includes a regular Tuesday after-hours shift from 3:00pm–10:30pm.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
You'll use your creativity, initiative and youth engagement skills to:
- Design and facilitate activities based on young people's interests and needs
- Plan weekly and school holiday activity programs
- Engage young people through sport, recreation, community events and other pro-social opportunities
- Work alongside young people to gather feedback and continually improve activities
- Build genuine, respectful relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds
- Support culturally secure and inclusive activities for all young people
- Work alongside another team member during after-hours Street Outreach
- Engage young people in community locations including shopping centres, train stations and other local areas
- Transport young people to activities, home or places of safety when required
- Represent ICYS through community events, stalls and engagement activities
- Complete activity risk assessments, attendance records, shift reports and case notes where required.
ABOUT YOU
We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys engaging with young people.
You'll need to be comfortable thinking on your feet, bringing people together and adapting activities when something isn't working. Just as importantly, you'll understand that sometimes engagement starts with simply showing up, listening and building trust.
You'll bring:
- A qualification in Youth Work, Community Development, Event Planning or a related field, or be currently studying
- Experience facilitating groups and activities for young people from diverse backgrounds
- An ability to build rapport and engage meaningfully with young people
- Strong communication, patience and active listening skills
- An understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based practice
- Strong planning, organisation and time-management skills
- Knowledge of the youth and broader community services sector.
Experience supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people is highly regarded. You'll also need to demonstrate an ability to contribute to culturally safe environments and work respectfully with young people, families and communities.
WHY ICYS?
