About the roles
The APS6 Senior Test Analyst / Test Lead will support the delivery of high-quality digital and data solutions by designing, executing and reporting on testing activities across web applications, APIs, backend systems, ETL pipelines, reporting platforms and integrated business systems.
The role requires strong analytical capability, sound judgement, stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work independently within a complex regulatory or government environment.
- Develop, maintain and execute test plans, test cases and test scripts across functional, integration, regression, API, backend, data and reporting components.
- Apply established test frameworks, procedures and quality assurance practices to ensure changes are tested effectively before deployment.
- Analyse business requirements, technical specifications and user stories to identify test conditions, risks, dependencies and coverage gaps.
- Validate data ingestion, transformation and reporting outputs, including ETL pipelines, backend data verification, SSAS Tabular models, Power BI dashboards and paginated reports.
- Use SQL and other relevant tools to verify data integrity, business rules, calculations and end-to-end processing outcomes.
- Create and execute manual and automated tests where appropriate, ensuring test evidence is accurate, complete and traceable.
- Support testing activities across the software delivery lifecycle, from requirements validation through to System Testing, SIT, Regression, UAT, operational testing and release readiness.
- Ensure agreed changes do not compromise data integrity, system quality, business functionality or the stability of existing services.
- Support business readiness by assisting with UAT planning, execution, evidence capture and stakeholder sign-off activities.
- Provide timely test status updates and escalate risks and issues based on test outcomes.
- Analyse, document and track defects, including severity, priority, ownership and resolution status.
- Liaise with Business Analysts, Developers, Product Owners, SMEs, Senior Test Analysts and business stakeholders to investigate and resolve issues.
- Prepare and maintain test artefacts, including test plans, test cases, execution records, defect reports, test summaries and release evidence.
- Assist in documenting business processes and testing procedures in line with organisational standards and industry best practice.
- Work independently to manage competing priorities, meet delivery timelines and contribute to a collaborative quality culture.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience working within, or with, a government, regulatory or complex stakeholder environment.
- Working knowledge of Jira, API testing tools such as Postman, SQL and integrated testing tools.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, SSAS Tabular models, Power BI dashboards or paginated reports.
- Experience contributing to test automation, continuous improvement of testing practices, or reusable testing artefacts.

- Operate with a high level of autonomy under limited direction, applying professional judgement to resolve moderately complex testing issues.
- Support delivery of testing outcomes across multiple stakeholders, systems and delivery phases.
- Provide clear reporting and evidence to support risk management and release readiness decisions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of quality assurance processes, test documentation, governance and knowledge sharing across the team.

APS6 Profile
- Demonstrated experience in testing large-scale applications across web applications, APIs, backend systems, data pipelines and reporting solutions within a complex organisational environment.
- Strong understanding of testing principles, methodologies and practices, including functional, integration, regression, UAT support, defect management and release readiness activities.
- Proven ability to analyse business requirements, technical specifications and user stories to design comprehensive test scenarios, test cases, test evidence and traceability.
- Experience validating data ingestion, transformation, integrity and reporting outputs, including ETL processes, SQL-based validation, dashboards, paginated reports and complex business rules.
- Well-developed communication, stakeholder engagement and APS6-level delivery skills, including the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement, prioritise competing tasks and deliver quality outcomes within agreed timelines.

If you are shortlisted for the role, you will be contacted by someone to progress to the next stage of the recruitment process. This is an chance to ask questions, as well as discuss any reasonable adjustments you might require.
To assess your suitability for the role, a selection panel will be established comprising of 2 or 3 people from the AER or another agency. The Panel Chair is usually the manager of the vacant role, but not always. Other members are usually from a different area of the AER.
If successful for further assessment, you may be asked to participate in remote or virtual locations, which would require you to have access to technology or a stable phone connection to participate. Interviews
Behavioural interviews are designed to get to know you a little better and so that you can get to know us. There will also be opportunities for you to ask us any questions. You will require access to reliable internet and technology to participate.
Reasoning Tests (ARAT)
The abstract reasoning test measures your lateral thinking skills including ability to quickly identify patterns, logical rules and trends in new data, integrate this information, and apply it to solve problems. We recommend practicing this test before undertaking your actual assessment. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and is a timed assessment.
Work sample test
Work sample tests are designed to test your ability to perform the job. The most common work sample tests are a written test where you are provided with a scenario and asked to write a response or briefing paper or a data analysis example where you are provided with a data sample and then asked to prepare a briefing note highlighting key themes.
