Build relationships, develop opportunities and play a key role in the continued growth of SSI SCHAEFER across Australia and New Zealand.
SSI SCHAEFER is looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to join our team and support the continued growth of our business across Australia and New Zealand.
This is a role for someone who enjoys developing new business, building strong customer relationships and turning customer needs into commercially successful solutions. You’ll identify and develop new opportunities, engage with customers to understand their operational and business requirements, and take ownership of opportunities through the sales lifecycle from initial engagement through to contract award.
You’ll work closely with Solutions Engineering, Software, Project Delivery, Customer Service and specialist teams across SSI SCHAEFER in Australia and internationally to develop compelling customer solutions and proposals that balance customer requirements, technical capability and commercial outcomes.
The role can be based in Sydney or Melbourne.
We offer a competitive base salary, plus superannuation and participation in our discretionary annual bonus program.
What You’ll Do
This is a genuine business development role. You’ll be out in the market building relationships, finding opportunities and understanding where SSI SCHAEFER can make a difference to a customer’s operation.
- Develop new business opportunities across Australia and New Zealand, from early conversations through to contract award.
- Get to know your customers, their operations and the challenges they’re trying to solve - and identify where there is a genuine opportunity for SSI SCHAEFER.
- Build relationships with key decision-makers and influencers and maintain those relationships throughout what can be a long and complex sales cycle.
- Bring the right people together from across SSI SCHAEFER to develop solutions and proposals that are attractive to the customer, technically deliverable and commercially sound.
- Lead the commercial side of your opportunities, including proposals, presentations and negotiations.
- Keep a clear view of your pipeline and priorities, knowing which opportunities to pursue, where to focus your time and what needs to happen next.
- Stay close to the market, keeping an eye on customer needs,
industry developments and emerging opportunities that could contribute to our future growth.
- Work with Project Delivery to make sure there is a strong handover when an opportunity becomes a project.
About You
We’re looking for a BDM first - someone who genuinely enjoys developing new business, opening doors and building the relationships that turn opportunities into long-term customers.
You’ll be commercially driven and proactive, but you’ll also be a team player. Our solutions are complex and no one develops them alone. You’ll need to be comfortable bringing together the right technical and commercial expertise, listening to different perspectives and working collaboratively to get to the best outcome for the customer and the business.
You’ll bring:
- Proven experience in business development or sales, ideally involving complex, solutions-based products or services.
- The drive and initiative to seek out and develop new opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to you.
- Strong commercial judgement and the ability to qualify opportunities and focus your effort where it matters.
- The ability to build credible relationships with customers and engage confidently with decision-makers at different levels.
- Strong communication, presentation and negotiation skills.
- The curiosity and aptitude to understand technical solutions well enough to discuss them credibly with customers and work effectively with our specialist teams.
- A disciplined approach to managing opportunities, priorities and your sales pipeline.
- The ability to work collaboratively across different functions, disciplines and cultures.
Experience in warehouse automation, intralogistics or material handling would certainly be an advantage, but it isn’t the only background we’re interested in. If you’ve successfully developed complex B2B opportunities in another industry and can demonstrate the commercial capability and aptitude to learn our solutions, we’d like to hear from you.
A tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering,
Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or a related applied science discipline would be highly regarded. Relevant mechanical or electrical trade qualifications combined with experience in logistics systems or automation solutions would also be well regarded.
