Set In Steel

Wollongong

Most concrete ends up in a foundation.
Ours ends up as the centrepiece of the room.
Become a Master Maker and build something extraordinary with us.
Who We're Looking For
The Mindset Matters More Than The Trade
You might come from carpentry, joinery, or shopfitting — the trade doesn't matter as much as the mindset.
If you can read a plan, fabricate with precision, work methodically through an installation, and lead yourself and eventually others — Set In Steel is built for someone like you.
You don't need to know everything we do right now.
We'll train you in our specific methods and processes.
What you do need is the drive to improve every single day, the standard to never leave something half done, and the confidence to work alone, lead a small team, distribute work intelligently, and bring people home safely.
We want the person who becomes so valuable to this business that we'd never want to lose them.
$76,000 – $90,000 (includes Super, sick and annual leave) + Overtime paid weekly — we pay based on what you bring, and your rate grows as your skills do.
Most concrete ends up in a foundation.
Ours ends up as the centrepiece of the room.
We handcraft architectural concrete — benchtops, basins, hearths, dining tables, outdoor furniture — for homes and projects across NSW.
Every piece is one-off.
Every piece is seen, touched and lived with for decades.
There is nowhere to hide a rushed edge.
We're looking for a person to join a small team and grow with the business.
We're not looking for ordinary.
We're looking for EXTRA-ordinary.
There's a difference between a worker and a doer.
A worker turns up, does what they're handed, and waits for the next instruction.
A doer walks in already knowing what's on this week, sees the thing that needs doing before anyone points at it, and gets it done to a standard nobody has to check.
We want the second one.
The person who becomes so valuable to this business that we can't imagine running it without them.
That person:
Learns fast and retains the knowledge.
Shown once, written down, done right the next time — and the time after that.
Follows the process we give them.
Our methods took years to develop.
There's room to improve them, and we want your ideas — but you learn the way first, then earn the right to change it.
Is already accurate.
Precision isn't something we can teach into someone who doesn't already care about a half-millimetre.
You either check your measurements twice or you don't.
Won't cut a corner.
Not when they're tired, not at 3:45 on a Friday, not when nobody's looking.
The last 5% — the edge, the wipe-down, the clean site — is the whole job.
Reads the room and the week.
Knows what's coming up, what's holding a job back, and where the pressure is on the team.

Speaks up early.
We hear about a problem at 9am, not at 3:30 when it's too late to fix.
What you'll work across
Every day here is different.
You'll build skills in:
Formwork and forming for complex furniture and benchtops
Concrete pouring and casting
Surface polishing, grinding, and sealing
Joinery and pre-fitting
Client site installation and delivery
Finish and detail work
There is no formal trade qualification for what we do.
We train our people from the ground up in Set In Steel's own methods — formwork, pouring, stripping, curing, polishing, sealing, and install procedure.
It's a niche skill set very few people in Australia have, and it's yours once you have it.
What you'll bring
A background in carpentry, joinery, shopfitting, or a related high skill level building trade
Demonstrated accuracy and attention to fine detail in precision work
The ability to read and interpret construction plans and drawings
Experience seeing installations through cleanly on client sites
A current Driver's Licence and White Card
(essential)
The self-awareness to know when to push on and when to ask
Bonus if you also have:
concrete or formwork experience, Cert III Carpentry / Joinery / Construction, forklift (LF), First Aid, or EWP ticket, or experience leading a small team.
The practical details
Hours:
7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, workshop or site.
Overtime is generally required 1–2 days per week and is paid weekly.
A pour doesn't wait and an install slot is booked around a client's builder, so start and finish times are fixed — we need to know we can rely on you being there for the full day.
Physical requirements:
This is demanding hands-on work.
You'll be on your feet all day, regularly lifting and manoeuvring heavy slabs, formwork and finished pieces (frequently over 30kg, often as a two-person lift), working overhead, kneeling, bending and handling powered tools for extended periods.
You'll need to be able to perform these tasks safely and consistently with no distractions.
Tired of the ABN runaround?
If you've spent time working under an ABN arrangement — chasing invoices, covering your own super, losing income to wet weather days and slow periods, and watching employers use contractor arrangements to avoid their obligations — this role is a direct alternative to all of that.
Guaranteed hours — no lost days,

no lost income
Superannuation paid weekly
Annual leave and personal leave — because life happens
PAYG employment — we handle your tax, you get a proper payslip
Overtime paid when the job demands it (generally you may be required to work later than 4pm 1-2 days per week)
"We're not looking for someone to invoice us. We're looking for someone to build a career with us."
This role is probably
not
for you if
You'd rather be handed a task list than work out what the day needs
You're comfortable handing over work that's 95% done
You'd rather be left alone than work as part of a small team
You need to be shown the same thing more than twice
You're after a stopgap while you look for something else
None of that makes you a bad tradesperson.
It just makes this the wrong job, and we've both got better uses for our time than finding that out in month two.
What we offer
$76,000 – $90,000 GROSS per annum based on experience, growing as your skills grow
Includes Superannuation
Includes annual leave + personal leave + leave loading
Overtime paid weekly
Full on-the-job training in a skill set almost nobody else in Australia teaches
Permanent full time employment — proper payslips, no ABN arrangements
A role that grows as the business grows, with a genuine path to team leadership
A small team where the person is valued as much as the work — you'll be known for what you bring, not the box you sit in
WE'LL FULLY TRAIN YOU IN
There is no formal trade qualification for what we do — we build our people from the ground up.
You'll be trained hands-on in:
- Set In Steel's formwork methods for furniture and bench pieces
- Concrete pouring, stripping, and curing processes
- Polishing and sealing techniques to our quality standard
- Installation and site work procedures
HOW TO APPLY
Send your resume to
••••@setinsteel.com.au
Tell us in a few sentences what you'd bring on day one and why this role appeals to you.
No lengthy cover letter needed — just be honest about where you're at.
Applications that don't answer all four won't be reviewed.
Following a written instruction is the first part of the job.
Confirm you can commit to 7:00am–4:00pm Monday to Friday, plus overtime 1–2 days in a typical week, on an ongoing basis — and that you're able to meet the physical requirements described above.
Tell us about something technical you were taught on a job in the last twelve months, and how you made sure you still knew it a month later.
Describe a job where the finish wasn't up to standard.
What did you do about it?
What are your current start and finish times, and why are you looking to move?
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
