Develop and deliver cutting-edge container crane automation technology
AMLab is a Western Australian technology company specialising in LiDAR and camera machine vision, industrial automation control systems and advanced software solutions for container terminals around the world.
As AMLab continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Senior Automation Software Engineer to take technical ownership of our crane control software.
Working in tandem with the spreader control system lead, you will take ownership of significant parts of the control software, testing systems and technical delivery.
About the role
This is a senior software engineering role for someone who enjoys solving difficult, real-world automation problems.
Key responsibilities
Design, develop and maintain Python-based software that makes reliable crane control decisions in real time.
This includes control logic sequencing, state-machine design, envisaging failure modes and edge cases, and testing required for safe and deterministic machine behaviour.
Act as product co-owner for the spreader control system, contributing across the full software lifecycle, from architecture and development through to testing, deployment, commissioning, ongoing support and improvements.
Develop automation logic that interfaces with crane drives and control systems, sensors, PLCs and other crane software.
Lead technical investigations and resolve complex software integration and commissioning issues.
Translate operational and customer requirements into practical software solutions.
Design scalable and maintainable software architectures suitable for deployment across multiple projects and sites.
Review software designs and code produced by other engineers.
Mentor and support junior engineers.

You will have opportunities to travel internationally, commission systems on some of the world's largest container-handling machines and see your software operating in the field.
About you
You are an experienced software engineer who takes ownership of outcomes rather than simply completing assigned development tasks.
Your experience allows you to consider the behaviour of the complete machine and interaction with the operator, so that the end design is functional and highly usable.
You are comfortable working through ambiguity, breaking complex problems into manageable components and balancing technical quality with practical project requirements.
You will have:
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a related discipline.
Significant professional software-development experience, involving industrial, automation, robotics or real-time systems.
Strong and demonstrable Python software-development skills, including understanding and working with code written as a team.
Experience designing and implementing robust software architectures, state machines, sequencing logic, decision systems or event-driven software.
Strong troubleshooting and debugging capability across complex, interconnected systems.
Experience taking responsibility for a product, subsystem or significant technical workstream.

Experience includes automated testing, simulation and regression testing.
The right to work in Australia, the willingness and ability to travel internationally and work at heights when required.
A combination of any of the following would be highly regarded:
Robotics, control systems, motion control or automation logic especially with LiDAR.
Motion control, feedback-control systems or other dynamic systems.
Simulation in Unity 3D, digital twins, or software/hardware-in-the-loop testing.
Experience working in container terminals, ports, mining, materials handling or other heavy-industrial environments.
Why join AMLab?
AMLab provides an environment where speed-to-deployment is very short, resulting in a high-intensity work environment amongst a team of bright engineers with outstanding work ethic.
Work on technically challenging automation systems with genuine real-world impact.
See the systems you develop operate on large-scale machinery around the world.
Join a growing Australian technology company exporting advanced engineering solutions globally.
Work closely with experienced engineers across software, automation, controls and machine vision.
Take meaningful ownership of products and technical decisions.
Flexible working arrangements are supported where practical.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
How to apply
Please submit your CV and a covering letter through SEEK.
In your covering letter, tell us about a technically difficult problem you have solved, a system or product you have taken ownership of, or a project you have built outside your normal employment.
We are particularly interested in engineers who enjoy creating things and can demonstrate practical technical curiosity.
