This role delivers culturally responsive continuity of midwifery care and care coordination for First Nations women who are pregnant, parenting, or transitioning between custody and the community. Working in partnership with women, families, Hospital and Health Services, community-controlled organisations and multidisciplinary stakeholders, the role aims to improve access, equity, cultural safety and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and infants in custody.
Temporary Full-time opportunity for up to 9 months.
It is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

About the role
The Clinical Midwife Consultant – Jaghu (Custodial Health) is an advanced practice registered midwife who provides expert clinical leadership, cultural leadership,
and strategic service development to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, newborns and families within custodial settings.
What we're looking for
Our ideal candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:
- Demonstrated expert level of clinical knowledge, expertise and skills in complex contemporary clinical practice, and evidence-based midwifery practice.
- Proven ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including a clear understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to provide authoritative counsel and clinical expertise on operational matters to management.
- Work collaboratively within a complex stakeholder and systemic framework with internal Queensland Health Services, and external government, non-government and private health sector service providers to achieve the best outcomes for the client.
- Demonstrated ability to provide operational leadership, strategic direction and management to a multidisciplinary team whilst ensuring adherence to clinical service standards and the achievement of quality and service delivery objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in quality improvement, service evaluation and research initiatives on a local basis.
