August 10, 2026 2 Min Read 7 0 JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has assured businesses that authorities will not use individual information collected through the 2026 Economic Census to calculate or enforce tax liabilities. BPS Deputy for National Accounts and Statistical Analysis M. Edy Mahmud issued the assurance in Jakarta on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

He did this amid concerns that businesses’ answers about revenue, employment or operations could reach the tax administration. “Tax authorities use other sources. Even the finance ministry has officially stated that tax data do not come from BPS. Not at all.

They told us, ‘We have our own way of obtaining tax data, not through BPS data,’” Edy said. The assurance applies specifically to identifiable responses collected by BPS. Indonesia’s Directorate General of Taxation (DJP) maintains its own administrative information, including tax returns and taxpayer records.

It may obtain legally authorized information from other institutions through regulated data-exchange mechanisms. Those systems are separate from confidential economic census responses, according to an official DJP. BPS conducts an economic census every 10 years to map changes in Indonesia’s business structure.

The 2026 operation is the country’s fifth economic census since the first exercise in 1986. Door-to-door data collection runs nationwide from June 15 to August 31. It covers micro, small, medium and large enterprises—including businesses operating through digital platforms, as quoted by the BPS. “The structure of the economy has begun to change, distribution methods have changed, and the way people transact has also changed.

That is why we must capture it,” Edy said. “The complete picture is important not only for the government but also for economic actors. If the picture is incomplete, we will face difficulties. 2026 is the right moment to conduct the economic census,” he added. The results will help policymakers and businesses understand the number, characteristics and distribution of enterprises.

They will provide benchmarks for economic planning and future statistical surveys. Article 21 of Indonesia’s Law No. 16/1997 on Statistics requires statistical organizers to protect information obtained from respondents.

Under

Article 36, an organizer who intentionally violates that confidentiality requirement may face up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp100 million. “BPS regulations provide robust protection for individual respondent data. The law protects that information,” Edy said,

emphasizing that BPS collects the answers solely for statistical purposes. BPS publishes census findings in aggregated form, combining responses so its releases do not identify a particular person or business.

The BPS says individual identities and company-specific information will not appear in its published statistics. The confidentiality guarantee aims to encourage businesses to provide complete and accurate answers. BPS needs this information to produce a reliable picture of Indonesia’s rapidly changing economy.
