KUBU RAYA, thekabarnews.com—Construction of the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Catholic Church officially began in Kapur Village, Sungai Raya district, Kubu Raya regency, West Kalimantan, on Thursday, August 6. This followed after local dialogue resolved an earlier misunderstanding surrounding the project.

Kubu Raya Regent Sujiwo led the groundbreaking ceremony alongside religious leaders, representatives of the Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), and members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum. Village officials, the church construction committee and local residents were also present.

Sujiwo said the earlier dispute stemmed from miscommunication rather than a fundamental disagreement over the church.

The local administration, community leaders and construction committee subsequently addressed the issue through discussions.

“Thank God, today we can hold the groundbreaking ceremony. I thank the Kapur Village administration and the entire community for their support, which has enabled construction of this church to begin,” Sujiwo said at the construction site.

The ceremony marked an important milestone for the Catholic community in Kapur Village. It also highlighted the role of dialogue in resolving sensitive community issues.

Authorities did not disclose further details about the earlier misunderstanding during the event.

Sujiwo and local officials inspected the proposed route for a new access road leading to the church.

He said the road would support the delivery of construction materials and provide long-term access to a developing area. Local residents could also use it. The Kubu Raya administration plans to build the road in stages.

The government will first prepare the land-acquisition process. Officials will then seek funding through a proposed revision to the 2026 regional budget, known as the APBD-P. They will begin physical construction in 2027.

The church project had previously received Rp500 million in assistance from Public Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar Sirait during his visit to Kubu Raya in March.

At that time, the local construction committee estimated that the building would cost approximately Rp10 billion. It would also accommodate between 800 and 1,000 worshippers.

Sujiwo previously instructed the committee to complete the required permits and comply with all administrative procedures.

The Kubu Raya administration’s official report on the ministerial visit said the regent had pledged to oversee the process. He would do so while upholding constitutional protections and religious tolerance.

The participation of FKUB, village representatives and different community groups in Thursday’s ceremony demonstrated the importance of local consensus. This was crucial in maintaining social cohesion.





Indonesia’s Religious Harmony Index reached 77.89 in 2025, its highest level since the survey began 11 years earlier, according to the religious affairs ministry.

The ministry said cooperation among governments, religious leaders and communities remains essential because interfaith harmony requires continuous engagement.

For Kubu Raya, the church and planned access road represent both a religious facility and a test of whether inclusive dialogue can translate into practical, shared development.
