Data Engineer / Data Analyst

At Elula, our vision is to make the complex simple and easy, delivering amazing customer experiences and personalisation that matters. We partner with some of Australia's top financial institutions to transform the way they engage with their customers.

We're a tight-knit, high-performing team that moves rapid, thinks big, and genuinely cares about the work we do and the people we do it with. Our culture is built on three things: an obsession with doing right by our customers; the accountability to own outcomes, not just tasks; and a camaraderie that makes people want to show up, not just for the work, but for each other.

Our products leverage machine learning, productionised models, data pipelines, explainable AI, and rich visualisations to drive customer engagement, retention and insights. We're constantly pushing the envelope, uncovering the ever-evolving needs of customers and staying ahead of the curve.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days look the same, where your contribution is visible and valued, and where the person you're supporting is deeply invested in your success - you'll feel right at home at Elula.

Join a team of some of the brightest minds in data science and engineering; experts with years of experience and a passion for delivering smarter decision-making. It's a fast-paced, high-performing and collaborative environment where creativity and learning take centre stage, and the work is as fun as it is rewarding.

The role

As a Data Engineer at Elula, you will play a key role in building and maintaining the data that powers our AI-as-a-Service platform. You will design, implement, and optimise data pipelines, models and tools, ensuring that our data is accurate, reliable, and scalable. You’ll collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers,

and customer-facing teams working end-to-end across the data lifecycle, from ingestion and modelling through to validation and delivery.

We're looking for someone who jumps at the opportunity to work autonomously on open-ended problems and thrives in an environment where collaboration, ambition, and excellence is paramount. Our ideal candidate is a stellar communicator, able to connect with all types of people, who puts their hand up, takes ownership, and is never afraid to ask for help when needed.

What You’ll Bring

If you have practical experience working with data, through projects or professional roles, and the following skills, we encourage you to apply.

- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to explore, clean, and transform data to make it usable

- Proficiency in SQL for querying, joining, and aggregating data

- Experience in a programming language (preferably Python) for data wrangling and automation

- Exposure to data pipelines or ETL processes, with an eagerness to learn best practices for building and maintaining them

- Familiarity with data modelling concepts and how data is structured for analysis

- Ability to take ownership from start-to-finish, working with limited supervision with awareness of when to escalate and ask for help.

- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain findings and collaborate with teammates across engineering and data science

- Curiosity and problem-solving mindset, with a willingness to learn new tools and techniques

- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools (such as Claude Code) as an amplifier; leaning on them to move faster, while exercising your own judgement and taking full ownership of the result.

Nice to Have

While the following are not required, they are highly valued.

- A background in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, mathematics, statistics or engineering

- Hands-on experience with:
- Distributed data processing frameworks such as Spark/PySpark

- Cloud data and computing platforms such as AWS (S3, Athena, Lamba, etc.)

- Applying data modelling and data management principles in practice

- Building and maintaining Python packages or reusable libraries

- Optimising query performance and ensuring data pipeline reliability

- Writing tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end) to validate data and code quality

- Using version control systems (e.g. Git) for collaborative development

Benefits

- Elula’s people are at the core of all we do. Our benefits are just one way we show that.

- Enjoy flexible working hours, and work from home two days per week, to better balance your personal and professional life.

- Experience the freedom of working anywhere in Australia up to five days annually.

- Give back to what matters to you with extra paid annual leave for volunteering.

- Put your health first with an allowance for fitness and wellbeing.

- Drive your development with financial support for approved training courses.

- Level up with matched funding for career coaching.
