Primary objective
Provides authoritative strategic and operational advice that influences contemporary nursing/midwifery practice and service delivery across a defined number of practice areas.
Context statement
As a member of the East Arnhem Regional Executive team, the Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Gove District Hospital, the position provides high level leadership with responsibility for the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of clinical care and professional, strategic, financial and business initiatives that contribute to performance and the provision of culturally safe, comprehensive and quality health care.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Leads and collaborates in the development, review, and evaluation of services, including interpreting established professional precedents and organisational policies, and supporting change management as required for operational effectiveness and delivery of contemporary safe and effective healthcare.
- Accountable for the outcomes of nursing/midwifery services across a defined number of practice areas and for addressing inconsistencies between practice and policy.
- Creditably advocate for nursing/midwifery and represent the profession(s) effectively across the Health Service and the NT.
- Demonstrate NTH values - safe; responsive; kind – in all decision-making and interactions with consumers and colleagues.
- Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
- Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
- Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia or eligible for same.
- Demonstrated contribution to the profession and/or specialty at local and national level.
- Demonstrated high-level leadership and management skills including strategic thinking, practical people management, and the ability to successfully support change in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment.
- Demonstrated ability to deploy financial and human resources strategically and effectively to support successful attainment of the organisation’s strategic and operational plans.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate a positive work environment that promotes professional excellence and builds organisational capability and responsiveness.
- Demonstrated use of effective communication skills to maximise productive working relationships, including with relevant specialists and executive management, and manages conflict to promote co-operation, teamwork and understanding.
- Demonstrates and applies highly developed knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities that influence health care provision for individuals and groups.
Desirable
- Masters Degree, or equivalent, beyond entry to practice relevant to specialty area.
- Graduate Certificate in Management or equivalent.

Ongoing appointment is subject to attainment of a Masters Degree, or equivalent, beyond entry-to-practice relevant to specialty.
The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and undergo a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position. This role carries specific immunisation requirements.
