About the role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Field Sampling Officer to join our team and support crop yield, quality and trial assessments throughout the growing and harvest season. The successful candidate will work closely with the Farm Operations Planner and/or Agronomist, assisting with field assessments, crop monitoring, trials, and data collection to support farm management and production decisions.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct yield assessments on each potato variety 2–3 weeks prior to desiccation to measure tuber growth.
- Identify and assess problem areas, including hills, wet spots, gaps in seed lines and other crop variations, and accurately measure and document these areas.
- Conduct yield and quality assessments approximately one week before desiccation, including documenting split grades by size and quality.
- Ensure identified problem areas are clearly marked on each pivot and communicate these areas to farm managers so they can be harvested separately where appropriate.
- Conduct final skin set, yield and quality assessments approximately one week prior to harvest.
- Conduct and assist with field and crop trials, including trial assessments, data collection and documentation.
- Assist the Farm Operations Planner and/or Agronomist with crop monitoring, field assessments, trial work and other agronomic activities.
- Assist with quality assessment projects, including examining produce shelf life and other quality-related characteristics.
- Accurately record and enter all assessment results into current recording and data management programs.
- Maintain accurate,
consistent and reliable data to support crop management, harvest planning, trial outcomes and quality decisions.
About you
- Highly organised, reliable and detail oriented.
- Interested in developing a long-term career in agriculture.
- Confident collecting, recording and documenting field and produce quality data.
- Experience in, or an interest in, quality assessment projects, including shelf-life assessments and other quality-related testing.
- Comfortable working outdoors and in a practical farm setting.
- Able to identify and accurately document variations in crop yield and quality.
- Comfortable using computer-based recording and data management programs.
- Able to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team.
- Good communication skills and able to clearly report field observations and assessment results.
- Willing to learn and take on additional responsibilities as skills and experience develop.
Training and Career Development:
Full training will be provided to the successful candidate. Previous extensive agronomic experience is not essential, as we are looking for someone with the right attitude, attention to detail and willingness to learn.
For the right candidate, this role provides a clear opportunity to develop a career in agronomy, with the potential to progress towards an Agronomist role as their knowledge and experience develop
