The Role

Balert Gerrbik supports families with providing a strong foundation for their children’s early learning and development through high-quality, culturally safe, evidence-based parenting support and programs.

Family Educators work alongside parents and caregivers in nurturing the skills and confidence needed to guide their children’s early learning and development. The initiative empowers parents and caregivers by expanding their knowledge and skills, helping them create nurturing environments where children can learn.

Families lead the way in every aspect of the program. They choose how and where they participate, and they set the goals that matter most to them. Family Educators are guided by the family’s priorities, values, and aspirations - ensuring that support is meaningful, culturally safe, and aligned with each family’s individual journey.

- An ability to work in a culturally respectful and competent manner with families and communities to ensure that cultural connections are fostered and maintained
- An understanding of developmental milestones for children
- An ability to work effectively with Aboriginal organisations, government departments and community service organisations
- An ability to facilitate group sessions with families and children
- A willingness to participate in training programs and in supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to develop positive stakeholder relationships and communicate with families in a culturally appropriate manner




- Ability to demonstrate resilience and work in challenging and high-pressured environments
- Strong written communication skills including a high level of accuracy, record keeping, and report writing abilities
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as part of a team and follow processes
- Knowledge of safe and appropriate culturally centred practices for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander focused services, including employment of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
- Demonstrated understanding of social, physical, economical, and cultural strengths and challenges affecting Aboriginal communities and their ability to access adequate and quality services.
- Understanding of the purpose and expectations of the Victorian Child Safe Standards and demonstrated commitment to contributing to a child safe organisation in both practice and culture.
- Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations
- *A police check, Working with Children Check, Vaccination Certificate and current Driver Licence are required for all positions.
