Lead Product Designer The Role

Lyrebird Health is looking for a Lead Product Designer to own design as a discipline, spanning discovery through to ownership of the design system.

This is the most senior design voice at Lyrebird: you set the standard everyone else designs against.

You'll report to the Head of Product Operations, working closely with our CEO/Founder, owning the whole arc of product design from problem framing and strategy through to shipped UI, and setting the architecture, the design system, and the standard the people around you are measured against.

About Us

Every day in Australia, 10 people die from preventable medical errors, not from incurable diseases, but from misdiagnosis, missed information, and clinicians making decisions under impossible pressure. At the centre of that failure is a doctor spending 40% of their day on paperwork instead of patients. Lyrebird is fixing that.

We turn real clinical conversations into accurate notes, automatically, then go further, connecting to the systems clinicians already use, automating the admin around a consult, and keeping patients in the loop too.

Thousands of clinicians use Lyrebird every day, in settings where accuracy, safety, and time matter enormously.

What you'll do

Build the product that people love: design experiences that solve users' real-world problems and feel intuitively obvious from the very first use

Discovery ownership: talk to clinicians directly, map jobs-to-be-done, and complete primary research with real clinicians in double figures before calling anything validated. Continuous discovery is baked into your process, not bolted on

End-to-end product design: own the whole arc, from problem framing and strategy through to shipped UI. Build prototypes, run interviews, and design the UX research to test your own hypotheses,

rather than waiting for it to land in your lap

AI-native delivery: you set the standard. Fluent in a Claude/Figma workflow, you'll prototype and ship in code (Cursor, Claude Code, MCPs) rather than handing over static screens

Design systems architecture: define the design system's architecture and underlying UX ontology, and keep the component library healthy day to day, so both designers and AI can implement against it consistently as we scale

Cross-functional partnership: partner with Product and Engineering, bringing a clear point of view on prioritisation and the outcomes that matter to the business

Velocity and urgency: set and hold the cycle time from problem to signed-off design, flag slippage the moment you see it, and build the systems and standards that let the rest of the function ship on-standard without bottlenecking on you

Leadership: raise the bar for the people around you, mentoring and coaching the designer working alongside you

What you'll bring A track record owning ambiguous, 0-to-1 product problems end to end, from framing through to shipped work without a leader defining the brief for you

Experience owning a design system's architecture and evolution, not just contributing components to one someone else built

Genuine fluency in an AI-native workflow, comfortable prototyping and shipping in code, including hands-on experience with MCPs or agentic coding tools

Fluency in agentic design within a software development lifecycle, not just prompting AI tools,

understanding how design integrates into how engineers actually build The product judgement to partner with Product as an equal, with a real point of view on business outcomes

Nice to have

Experience in high-growth start-ups or high-pace US-based SaaS businesses

Experience designing in clinical, healthcare, or other high-trust regulated environments

Our Perks

Parental Leave: 14 weeks paid leave for primary caregivers, 4 weeks for secondary caregivers

Flexible Work: a hybrid model for our Melbourne team, because great work happens in more places than the office

Health & Wellbeing: wellness initiatives, yearly flu jabs, and free confidential access to our Employee Assistance Program

Work from Anywhere: take up to 6 weeks a year to work from wherever inspires you

Career Development: coaching, mentoring, courses, and lunch and learns. Growth here isn't accidental, it's something we invest in deliberately

Social Club: monthly team lunches and quarterly offsites, because work is better when you genuinely like the people you do it with

Breakfast & Snack Bar: a fully stocked kitchen, kombucha included

Referral Program: earn real money for bringing great people into a great team

Every design decision you make here shows up in a clinician's day, in the minutes they get back with a patient instead of a keyboard. This is a role with real weight to it, and the chance to define what design at Lyrebird becomes as we grow.

We're building a team that reflects the diversity of the people who benefit from our work. We want Lyrebird to be a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and able to thrive. If you're from an underrepresented background in tech, we strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every requirement.
