Mental Health Counsellor / Social Worker

Rural Health Tasmania are looking for our next Mental Health Counsellor / Social Worker!

You will be working in a community setting on the beautiful North West Coast in Smithton, from our brand-current office space with the possibility of working some hours from our Wynyard site. Rural Health Tasmania is a proud winner of a Business Tasmania Employer of Choice award 2025.

We value being a family friendly flexible employer, with a focus on wellbeing with a paid mental health day and opportunities for PD. We are not a crisis service, with office hours of 9-5 Monday to Friday.

The Program/Role

Our Rural Primary Health Service supports people in the community experiencing chronic health conditions and mental health challenges. In this role, you’ll work one-on-one with clients and families to provide counselling, support, advocacy and connections to the services they need to live well.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about people, enjoys working as part of a supportive team and wants to make a real difference in a rural community.

- Diploma or above in Mental Health Counselling or relative Tertiary qualifications such as Social Worker or other relevant field

- Experience in providing psychological strategies and interventions, including working with individuals, couples and families, including youth.





- Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in relationship, trauma informed practice & mental health counselling including case management, triage, mental health assessment and clinical risk management within the community setting.

- Previous experience working with men and counselling couples, families and children.

- Demonstrated knowledge of child development, child protection, mandatory reporting, suicide prevention/ intervention and family violence issues.

- Highly developed written oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, communicate effectively with other sectors of mental health services and primary health care providers, provide clearly articulated, appropriate referrals and document case notes effectively.

- Ability to undertake patient/client education in the practice setting, together with a commitment to participate in ongoing professional development.

- Understanding of the issues facing people in remote and rural communities.

- Current unsuspended drivers licence

- Current Working with vulnerable persons registration employment classification

- Current (within 3 months) National Police Check or ability to get one

- Must be able to provide minimum 2 employment based references
