BDAC is an ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation) registered as a member under the umbrella of VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and represented nationally through NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation).

BDAC was founded to represent and provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on Djaara Country.

About the Role The Registered Nurse or Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP) – Public Intoxication Response (PIR) works as part of a multidisciplinary outreach team delivering culturally safe, trauma-informed, and health-focused care to individuals experiencing intoxication or related health vulnerabilities across the Greater Bendigo and Castlemaine regions. In alignment with the Victorian Government’s decriminalisation of public intoxication, the role aims to improve health outcomes, reduce alcohol and other drug-related harm, and support community wellbeing through clinical assessment, timely intervention, and person-centred care.

The core function of the Public Intoxication Response (PIR) Service is to provide a responsive outreach health service to individuals affected by intoxication or at risk of adverse health and social outcomes. This includes undertaking comprehensive health assessments, delivering immediate clinical care and harm minimisation interventions, monitoring health status,



facilitating safe transfer or referral to appropriate services, and providing follow-up care as required. Through proactive engagement, health education, and care coordination, the PIR team supports individuals to access the health and social services they need, promoting recovery, reducing health risks, and strengthening connections to ongoing care and support.

What you will bring

- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, community priorities, and the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) model of care, with a commitment to culturally safe and trauma-informed practice.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in an after-hours on-call roster and provide responsive outreach support to Community members experiencing intoxication, health concerns, and social vulnerabilities.
- Experience working within alcohol and other drug (AOD), mental health, emergency care, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), or similar community-based or acute health services.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake health assessments, identify risks,



and provide appropriate clinical interventions and harm minimisation support.
- Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with Community members, families, service providers, emergency services, and other key stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team while also working independently in outreach and community-based settings.
- Demonstrated ability to manage risk, respond to crisis situations, and maintain the safety and wellbeing of Community members and colleagues.
- Proven adaptability, resilience, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond effectively to changing priorities and community needs.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement, professional development, and evidence-based practice.

Education, Training and/or Competencies

Mandatory

- Bachelor of Nursing – Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care -Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency

Preferred/ desired

Previous experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members or in an Aboriginal organisation.
