JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—President Prabowo Subianto is advancing a nationwide overhaul of school textbooks. His administration seeks to strengthen literacy, modernize learning materials, and prepare Indonesian students for growing global competition.

The review will cover textbooks used from elementary through senior high school.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said at the Presidential Office in Jakarta on Friday, August 7, 2026, that Prabowo’s concerns emerged after the president personally examined learning materials. During this process, he visited several schools.

“The president examined the textbooks used by students one by one, from the quality of the materials and font size to their readability,” Teddy said.

Based on those observations, Prabowo instructed officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment of textbook content and physical quality.

The government also plans to compare Indonesian textbooks with those used in neighboring countries to identify possible improvements.

The latest direction builds on an order Prabowo issued during a June 11 meeting at the Merdeka Palace.

At that meeting, the president asked Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti to establish a team to review textbooks.

This team must also align them with technological developments and contemporary learning needs.

The planned evaluation will examine more than appearance and production quality.

Teddy said Prabowo wants textbooks to reinforce national character while giving students stronger foundations in science, technology and foreign languages.

“Textbooks are expected to feature more engaging designs, font sizes that are easier to read and better-quality materials so they can be used for longer,” Teddy said.

Officials expect clearer layouts and more durable materials to improve students’ reading experience. At the same time, these efforts should allow schools to use books for longer periods.

The review will also consider how textbooks can encourage children to develop consistent reading habits from an early age.

The initiative comes amid persistent concerns about student literacy.

The OECD’s PISA 2022 country assessment found that only 25 percent of Indonesian 15-year-olds reached at least Level 2 proficiency in reading. This contrasts with an OECD average of 74 percent.

At that level, students can identify a text’s main idea, locate information and reflect on its purpose.

Indonesia already operates the Indonesian Book Information System (SIBI), which lists books assessed and validated by the Education Ministry’s Book Center.

The ministry advises schools and families to select materials that have passed this assessment process, according to its Directorate of Primary Schools.

The government has not yet announced a completion deadline, procurement budget or distribution schedule for the revised textbooks.

Those details will be crucial in determining when the review produces tangible changes in classrooms across Indonesia.
