Role Description The Senior Lawyer will provide high-level criminal defence representation, managing a caseload of complex matters from initial client consultation through to final resolution. Day-to-day responsibilities include advising clients on legal strategy, reviewing disclosure, appearing in Court for bail applications, sentence hearings, trials, and appeals, and negotiating with prosecution and other stakeholders.
The role also involves mentoring junior lawyers, contributing to practice development, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and case law. This is a full-time, in office role based in Perth, WA, requiring regular attendance at Courts across Western Australia.
Qualifications
- Admission as a lawyer in Australia,
with a current practising certificate and substantial post-admission experience in criminal law.
- Demonstrated expertise in advocacy, including conducting trials, bail applications, sentence hearings, and appeals in superior and lower Courts.
- Strong legal research, analytical, and drafting skills, with the ability to prepare clear and persuasive submissions and other Court documents.
- Excellent client relationship skills, including the ability to manage sensitive matters, communicate complex issues clearly, and provide pragmatic advice.
- Proven ability to mentor and supervise junior practitioners, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and contribute to a high-performance team environment.
- Sound organisational and case management skills, including managing competing deadlines and maintaining accurate file records.
- High ethical standards, sound professional judgment, and a commitment to access to justice and positive outcomes for clients.
- Experience in Western Australian criminal procedure and familiarity with relevant legislation and sentencing principles; appellate experience is highly regarded.
- Postgraduate qualifications or specialist accreditation in criminal law are advantageous but not required.
