About Us:

Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a maximum-security remand facility based in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Prisoners on remand are alleged offenders who were not bailed when charged with a crime and are awaiting the outcome of their court case.





The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a 954-bed maximum security facility for unsentenced male offenders within the Department of Justice and Community Safety.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Youth Development Officer (YDO), the Team Leader – Youth Services position at the Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a unique role aimed at working closely with young offenders to break down the recidivism cycle. The MRC's youth profile consists of 18–25-year-old prisoners. This cohort accounts for approximately 10 to 15 percent of the MRC's general population. The Team Leader – Youth Services role is a central component of the MRC's commitment to a targeted youth response. The Team Leader – Youth Services is responsible for conducting welfare reception assessments,responding to young prisoner welfare needs and working closely with custodial and non-custodial staff to ensure that best-practice case-management strategies are utilised.

Some of your duties will include:

- Assisting the Youth Development Officer in the development, implementation and evaluation of young offender programs according to current correctional philosophies, legislative requirements, prison policies and correctional standards in addition to best-practice Youth Work principles.
- Attending a range of meetings providing input to the leadership team ensuring the day to day commitments of the team are met.
- Co-ordinating program sessional and contractors ensuring efficient and effective delivery of programs and services to 18–25-year-old prisoners.

About You:

- Experience in or understanding of working within a correctional setting

As an ideal candidate, you will possess:

- A relevant qualification or experience in human services, welfare practice or related field would be highly desirable
- Aligns work activities with operational plans and organisational values and goals through effective people management and role modelling. Allocates tasks in line with roles defined.
- Ensures that day to day planning and work processes are in line with team/organisation strategy; identifies and develops own and team objectives linking strategies to actions to achieve these; guides others in strategic planning process.
