About Pankind
Pankind is the leading organisation dedicated to improving outcomes for Australians affected by pancreatic cancer and tripling pancreatic cancer survival by 2030. We fund research, support people living with pancreatic cancer and their carers, and advocate for a fair chance at earlier diagnosis and better treatment.
The Role
Stories are how we turn Pankind's mission from a set of numbers into something people feel, believe in, and act on. They build trust, bring our community closer together, and remind everyone fighting for a fairer chance that they're not alone.
We're looking for a Storytelling and Social Media Specialist to find, gather and share these stories, and to build genuine community around them on organic social. You'll actively seek out new stories from across our community, people living with pancreatic cancer, carers, researchers, fundraisers and supporters, and give the rest of the organisation clear guidelines so anyone can collect a story respectfully and consistently. You'll also own our organic social presence and the everyday conversations that happen there, making sure every comment, message and mention is met with care.
Key Responsibilities
Story sourcing & storytelling
- Actively seek out new stories from across our community, people living with pancreatic cancer, carers, researchers, fundraisers and supporters, building genuine, ongoing relationships rather than waiting for stories to come to us.
- Interview, write and edit stories for use across the website, social media, email, appeals and reports, always with the storyteller's informed consent and in language they're comfortable with.
- Develop and maintain clear guidelines and templates for other teams: Programs, Fundraising and Research, so anyone across the organisation can collect a story consistently, respectfully and in line with Pankind's tone of voice.
- Build and manage a growing library of stories and assets, ready to draw on across campaigns and channels.
Community management
- Manage day-to-day engagement across Pankind's social channels: responding to comments,
messages and mentions with warmth, care and the right tone for the person on the other end.
- Recognise and escalate sensitive situations: distress, misinformation, crisis; following clear guidelines and know when to bring in Programs or leadership.
- Build relationships with community members over time, so people feel genuinely heard, not just replied to.
Organic social
- Manage and grow our social media presence, ensuring consistent and impactful messaging.
- Plan and publish organic content across Pankind's social channels, balancing storytelling, awareness, advocacy and community-driven content.
- Work with the marketing team to keep visuals and messaging on-brand, and with AI agents where useful to help draft, test or schedule content, reviewing everything before it goes live.
- Track organic social performance and use what's working to inform future content and story sourcing.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices to ensure our social media efforts are innovative and effective.
Working with the wider team
- Work with the marketing team to feed stories and community insight into campaigns, journeys and content.
- Champion Pankind's tone of voice and cancer language guidelines across the organisation, particularly when other teams are collecting or sharing stories.
About You
You're a natural connector, someone people trust enough to share their story with. You listen well, write warmly, and know how to turn a conversation into content that moves people, without ever losing sight of the person behind it.
Essential
- Proven experience in storytelling, journalism, content creation or community management, ideally in a not-for-profit, health or social impact setting.
- Excellent interviewing,
writing and editing skills, able to capture someone's story faithfully and sensitively.
- Experience managing social media community engagement, including sensitive or difficult conversations.
- Confidence creating and scheduling organic social content across major platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn), including using Canva to design social posts and adding stories to our website.
- A genuine, demonstrated interest in the people Pankind exists for.
- Comfortable setting guidelines and coaching colleagues who aren't content specialists to collect stories well.
- High emotional intelligence and judgement when working with people affected by pancreatic cancer, their carers and families.
- Curiosity about AI tools, and comfort using them to support genuine storytelling and community engagement.
Desirable
- Experience with video or photography for social storytelling.
- Familiarity with CMS or marketing automation platforms.
- Experience working in health, medical or bereavement-sensitive contexts.
What you'll get
- A chance to be part of a small, committed team making a real difference.
- A high-trust, versatile workplace that values outcomes over hours.
- The chance to be the person who finds and tells the stories that drive Pankind's mission forward.
- Opportunities to grow and shape how Pankind shows up on social and in our community.
- Salary packaging benefits up to $15,900 for living expenses and $2,650 for meals and accommodation.
- A sense of purpose, knowing your work supports life-changing progress.
What Success Looks Like (first 6–12 months)
- A growing, well-documented library of community stories, collected respectfully and with proper consent.
- Clear story-collection guidelines in active use across Programs, Fundraising and Research.
- Organic social channels show strong, growing engagement and a genuine sense of community.
- Sensitive community interactions are handled with care and escalated appropriately when needed.
