Bring your maritime experience to a role where the work directly supports Australia’s Defence capability. Based at HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney, you’ll join Serco’s Defence Marine Support Services team in a casual position, providing qualified seamanship, vessel operations and marine engineering support across a range of Defence maritime activities. It’s an opportunity to keep using your practical skills while contributing to safe, reliable operations for Navy.
As a Master <24m / Marine Engine Driver Grade III, you’ll make a positive impact by:
- Operating as Master, Mate or General Purpose Hand in line with your AMSA qualifications
- Supporting harbour services, consort duties, fuelling operations and marine support activities
- Conducting vessel manoeuvres, cargo handling, seamanship and shipboard drills
- Performing maintenance and marine engineering activities aligned to your MED III certification
- Maintaining vessel logs, work orders and operational documentation
- Supporting the training and induction of personnel involved in inshore vessel operations
- Working closely with Defence, Serco teams and contractors to ensure safe and effective operations

You’ll suit this role if you’re an experienced maritime professional who takes pride in safe vessel operations, sound seamanship and looking after the equipment entrusted to you. You’re comfortable working as part of a crew, can operate with limited supervision when required and understand the importance of professional standards when supporting Defence. Previous Navy or Defence maritime experience will be well regarded, and veterans with relevant qualifications and experience are encouraged to apply.
You could be a great fit if you have:
- A current AMSA Certificate of Competency as Master less than 24 metres Near Coastal and Marine Engine Driver Grade III Near Coastal
- Maritime industry experience, ideally within Defence or supporting naval operations
- First Aid Certificate
- Experience carrying out vessel maintenance and engineering activities
- Strong knowledge of safe work practices and environmental requirements
- A current driver’s licence and the ability to work across multiple Serco Defence locations when required
- Excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to show initiative and work effectively under pressure.
The following you either hold or be able to obtain:
- Statement of Attainment – Protected Cargo Operations on Oil and Chemical Tankers
- Tanker Familiarisation
- Statement of Attainment – Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
- High Risk licences Dogging, Crane,
working within a confined space
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) where required by the business.
