Disability support worker (personal care)
Hatcher Disability Support Pty Ltd - Melbourne VIC
I am looking for a disability support worker to join my team in Melbourne CBD. This is a casual role supporting me in my home and sometimes while travelling to work, appointments, and other activities.
This is not a typical disability support role. I value a high degree of choice and control in how support is provided, and I am looking for someone who can work flexibly and adapt to my needs from day to day.
About me
I am a woman in my 30s living in Melbourne CBD. I am passionate about human rights, inclusion, accessibility, advocacy, coding, history, musicians, action movies, horses, and dogs. I am also developing a small business.
Due to my disability, I need assistance with daily living activities including getting in and out of bed, showering, toileting, dressing, and other personal care tasks. I use a power wheelchair and a range of disability equipment.
Because of chronic pain, fatigue, and neurodiversity, my support needs can vary from day to day. On good days, support may involve helping me do more for myself. On harder days, it may involve helping me conserve energy and get through essential tasks.
Direct employment
I use my NDIS funding to directly employ support workers through a special purpose non-profit that I run: Hatcher Disability Support Pty Ltd.
I choose direct employment to recruit, train, and manage my own team of staff. There is no third-party agency involved. I will be your client and manager. The role is covered by WorkCover insurance and the SCHADS Award
Responsibilities
Learn my care plans and ask questions to understand my needs, preferences, abilities, and goals.
Provide person-centred support.
Assist with personal care and daily living activities.
Support mobility and self-care, including equipment-assisted manual handling.
Communicate clearly and honestly.
Perform other lawful and reasonable support tasks as needed.
Training
Paid training is provided and may include:
Shadow shifts with an existing support worker.
E-learning modules.
Training from professionals such as a physiotherapist or neuropsychologist where needed.
Requirements
Right to work in Australia.
Positive English communication skills (approximately IELTS 7 or equivalent).
Confidence and patience.
Growth mindset.
Sense of humour.
Must like dogs.
You will also need
A current National Police Check, or willingness to obtain one.
A current First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain one.
International Criminal History Check if required based on residence history.
