Full-Time, Fixed Term appointment up to 3 years Melbourne (Bundoora) location Appointee will either be appointed as level B or Level C Classification: Level B - Base salary from $118,530 + 17% superannuation Classification: Level C - Base salary from $144,266 + 17% superannuation About the position The Victorian Government has partnered with La Trobe University to establish the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Innovation (ACAMI).
Established in ****, ACAMI is a collaborative research, clinical trials and workforce development centre operating at the intersection of AI and medical innovation.
The Centre supports local medical research institutes and industry partners, delivering new and additional capabilities to ensure Victoria's world-leading medical innovation and life sciences research ecosystem maintains pace with global standards and opportunities as AI capability develops.
A Level B or C academic will develop new ACAMI research projects, support engagement with industry, clinical, health-sector and medical research partners, and work closely with ACAMI's Director, Development, to translate research outcomes into practical tools, software, prototypes, workflows and partner-facing applications.
Duties at this level: Lead and conduct high-quality research in AI-enabled medical, biomedical, biological, and health innovation under broad direction of ACAMI's Director Chief Scientist, contributing to current methods, validated applications and practical solutions for significant medical and health challenges.
Contribute to establishing and growing new research programs, project teams or research clusters within ACAMI, including identifying complementary research capabilities, engaging collaborators, developing project plans and supporting sustainable research activities.
Work with ACAMI's Director Chief Scientist, ACAMI's Director, Development, and external partners to scope real-world medical, biomedical, biological, clinical and health challenges, co-design research approaches, and contribute to validated AI-enabled tools, software, models, workflows, prototypes or partner-facing solutions.
Skills and knowledge:



Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area, such as AI/ML for medical innovation, Biomedical Informatics, Computational Biology, Biomedicine, or a related field.
A strong record of high-quality research applying AI/ML methods to address significant medical and health challenges, including in biomedical discovery, clinical translation, healthcare, medical innovation, or related areas, with evidence of national and/or international recognition.
Demonstrated ability to develop competitive research proposals and secure external research funding and partner investment, including through competitive grants, industry partnerships, government agencies, philanthropic organisations, or equivalent mechanisms.
Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality research outputs in leading AI-enabled medical/biomedical, bioinformatics, computational biology, or interdisciplinary venues, and to present research at national and international conferences.
