Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant to join Faculty Operations, Faculty of Science.

The Laboratory Assistant role provides support to the supervising and senior technicians for teaching and laboratory operations, assisting with the preparation, setup, and pack-down of practical classes across a range of disciplines. The position ensures materials, equipment, and consumables are ready for use, supports basic laboratory activities, and contributes to maintaining organised, functional teaching environments. The role also involves routine tasks such as stock handling, cleaning, and general assistance to technical staff, enabling efficient day-to-day lab operations. The role operates within defined procedures with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and teamwork. Responsibilities include adhering to laboratory health and safety requirements, using appropriate PPE, and supporting safe work practices in all activities. Laboratory Assistants contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment, provide basic assistance to students and staff, and help maintain compliance with laboratory standards to support the effective delivery of practical teaching.

The work area sits within the Faculty of Science Technical Services team, which provides coordinated support for teaching laboratories across multiple disciplines. The team operates in a high-throughput, teaching-focused environment, supporting the delivery of practical classes across a range of laboratory spaces. Work is scheduled around teaching timetables, requiring consistent preparation, turnaround,



and readiness of laboratories to support student learning and academic requirements. The work area is governed by established procedures, safety standards, and service expectations to ensure laboratories are safe, compliant, and operational at all times. Staff work collaboratively with technical teams, academic staff, and students to maintain organised laboratory environments and support laboratory access and activities. The environment requires flexibility, teamwork, and responsiveness to changing teaching demands, with a strong emphasis on safety, efficiency, and service delivery..

What you need to succeed

1. Completion of a relevant associate diploma, with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training, in a scientific chemistry laboratory or industry research environment.
2. Proven ability to organise and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines in a changing work environment.
3. Ability to provide reliable service support, including clear, timely and accurate communication to coordinate tasks and meet operational requirements.
4. Sound capability in following laboratory procedures and supporting routine laboratory activities, including identifying issues and applying practical problem-solving approaches within defined processes.
5. Effective contribution as part of a team in a busy laboratory environment, supporting positive team outcomes.
6. Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, including correct manual handling techniques, and maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
7. Hold a current C-class driver licence.
8. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and Indigenous Australian engagement.
