Admissions

The Resident is expected to take a history and perform a physical examination on each of the elective admissions admitted under their team. Usually emergency admissions will already have been clerked by the Emergency Department Trainee or Resident. It is the Resident’s duty to confirm that any necessary consent has been signed or obtain such consent from the parent/guardian. It is preferable that the patient’s weight and vital signs as well as results of lab tests and other preoperative investigations be noted in the chart when available. Residents are not expected to admit Day Case only patients. As some services only operate on one or two days of the week, there may be a substantial list of admissions on the preceding day. In the past, the Surgical Residents have frequently helped eachother out with these admissions, sharing the duties across the services to ensure completion of work in a timely manner.

In-patient Care

The Resident is expected to make daily ward rounds, in conjunction with and at a mutually convenient time for the team trainee or consultant. This includes writing daily progress notes and appropriate orders, organising and following up on investigations, writing fluid orders, starting IV’s and drawing blood as necessary.



Every patient should have at least one entry each day from the surgical team treating the patient that should incorporate the date and time of the team’s clinical review. ENT SRMO traditional duties include RMO to Ophthalmology and Dental Units. These duties comprise a small but important component of overall inpatient responsibilities. These duties may also include maxillary-facial surgical patients. If problems arise with ward patients, the Resident should firstassess the patient and then contact the relevant trainee, Fellow and/or consultant to determine a plan of corrective action. Surgical patients in the neonatal intensive care unit or paediatric intensive care unit do not need to be seen by the Ward Resident, as the appropriate ICU team will care for those patients. When these patients are discharged to the ward the team’s Surgical Resident should review them on arrival and make an appropriate entry in the notes.

Selection Criteria:

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
- Completion of two years postgraduate training
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach,



and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff
- Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal
- Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees preferable
- Demonstrated interest in ENT Head and Neck Surgery
