The Role

We're looking for a Head Mechanic to take ownership of our Rainbow Beach workshop. This is a hands-on leadership role — you'll be on the tools and running the shop, managing a five-hoist facility, a small team, and the servicing schedule that keeps our tours departing on time.

Beach and inland-track driving is tough on vehicles. Saltwater exposure, corrosion management, suspension, driveline and cooling systems are the daily reality here. If you like solving real problems on real 4WDs rather than plugging in a laptop and reading codes, you'll enjoy this.

Not Every Day Is In The Workshop

Some days you'll be on K'gari. When a vehicle goes down on the beach or on an inland track, you'll be the one heading over to sort it — roadside diagnosis, on-the-spot repairs, and the occasional recovery. It's problem-solving with limited tools, a tide clock running, and Seventy-Five Mile Beach as your workshop floor.

It's not for everyone. But for the right person it's the best part of the job — and it's the reason our mechanics stay.

What You'll Be Doing

- Leading day-to-day workshop operations across five hoists
- Scheduling and prioritising servicing, repairs and pre-departure work around tour departures
- Hands-on diagnostics, servicing and repair of the LandCruiser and Prado fleet
- On-island breakdown response,



field repairs and vehicle recovery
- Managing corrosion prevention and post-beach wash-down/inspection programs
- Supervising and mentoring workshop staff and apprentices
- Managing parts ordering, supplier relationships and stock levels
- Maintaining service records, compliance documentation and pre-departure check standards in our fleet management system (Fleetio)
- Working closely with the Operations Manager on fleet availability, capital works and vehicle replacement planning

What You'll Bring

- Trade qualification in Automotive Mechanical Technology (Light and/or Heavy Vehicle)
- Heavy diesel experience highly desirable
- Workshop supervisory or management experience preferred
- Robust Toyota 4WD experience — 1HZ, 1HD-FTE, 1KZ-TE and 1GR-FE engines an advantage
- Confident 4WD and soft-sand driving ability, or the willingness to learn quickly
- Ability to work at pace and reprioritise when a vehicle comes off the beach unexpectedly
- Sound record-keeping and comfort with digital fleet systems
- Current driver's licence (LR/MR an advantage)
