Casual roles | Newcastle and Kotara

We’re looking for a few great people to join the teams at Xtraction and Flo.

Some café experience would be preferred—especially experience behind a coffee machine—but the most important requirement is that you genuinely enjoy people.

We can continue developing someone’s coffee skills. What is much harder to teach is warmth, awareness and the instinct to make every customer feel properly looked after.

About the roles

These are hands-on café all-rounder positions. Depending on your experience and the café you work at, your shifts may include:

- Preparing consistently excellent coffee

- Taking orders and confidently helping customers

- Running food and drinks

- Preparing simple café food

- Keeping the café clean, organised and ready for service

- Learning regular customers’ names and orders

- Supporting the team wherever you’re needed

You won’t be expected to stand in one position all day. We value people who notice what needs doing, communicate well and comfortably move between different parts of the café.

Two cafés, the same standard of care

Xtraction and Flo have different rhythms, but the expectation is the same at both: excellent coffee, genuine hospitality and customers who feel known and properly looked after.

At both cafés, that means remembering names and orders, recognising familiar faces, welcoming new ones and paying attention to what each customer needs from their visit.

Xtraction — Newcastle

Xtraction is a quick-paced city café serving plenty of customers who have somewhere to be.





They may only be with us for a few minutes, but those minutes still matter. We want every customer to be welcomed properly, served efficiently and handed something made with genuine care.

The best people at Xtraction can move quickly without making the experience feel rushed. They remember the regular whose order needs to be ready to run, start a conversation when someone has time and understand that fast service should still feel personal.

Flo — Kotara

Flo offers the same quality and care within a slightly more relaxed, neighbourhood rhythm.

Many customers stay a little longer, settle in with their coffee and enjoy having more time to connect with the team. Remembering names, orders and the small details is just as important here—it simply has more room to linger.

The difference between the cafés isn’t the standard of service. It’s the pace of the customer’s day.

Whether someone is grabbing a coffee on the way to work or sitting down for an hour, we want them to leave feeling recognised, cared for and keen to return.

What we’re looking for

You’ll be a strong fit if you:

- Are naturally friendly and confident with customers

- Care about making excellent coffee

- Stay calm and useful during busy services





- Notice what needs to be done without always being asked

- Communicate clearly and support the people around you

- Take pride in cleanliness, presentation and consistency

- Are reliable and arrive ready to contribute

- Are open to feedback and genuinely want to improve

Previous café or barista experience is highly regarded, but we’re also open to someone with less experience who has strong people skills, a great work ethic and a genuine interest in coffee.
