About the role

Family Violence Therapeutic Counsellor is responsible for providing culturally safe, trauma-informed therapeutic counselling and support to Aboriginal women, children, adolescents and families impacted by family violence.

The role focuses on supporting healing through culture by strengthening connection to identity, family, community and wellbeing through therapeutic engagement and culturally responsive practice. Supporting clients with therapeutic engagement, readiness and participation in counselling supports. Provide outreach support, including home visits and community-based engagement and provide outreach support, and community-based engagement where appropriate.

It is important to establish and maintain positive working relationships with Elders, community members and partner agencies.

About You

- Awareness and knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal culture, values and the importance of cultural identity and connection in the healing process for Aboriginal children and families
- Demonstrated understanding of the Family Violence and Child Protection sectors, with experience working alongside Aboriginal women, children, young people and families




- Experience providing trauma-informed therapeutic counselling within a culturally safe environment
- Demonstrated experience undertaking family violence risk assessments, safety planning and therapeutic client support
- Ability to build and maintain respectful therapeutic relationships with clients experiencing complex needs
- Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate documentation, case notes and reports within required timeframes
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a clear, respectful and culturally appropriate manner with clients, families, community members and professionals .
- A tertiary qualification in social work, psychology, counselling, family therapy or a related discipline
- Requirements: Valid Police Check, a Victorian Working with Children’s Check for a paid employee (or willingness to obtain) and a Victorian Driver Licence. Current COVID-19 vaccination (Strongly Recommended)
