About the role

We are looking for an Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team based in Richmond.

This role would suit someone in the early stages of their accounting career who already has some practical experience and is ready to broaden their knowledge and take on greater responsibility.

Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will gain exposure across a wide range of accounting activities and have the opportunity to develop a good understanding of the finance function as a whole. We don't expect you to come in knowing everything – we're looking for someone with a solid foundation who is keen to learn, asks questions and wants to understand not just what they're doing, but why.

As your knowledge of the business and your technical capability develop, we expect the role to develop with you.

What you'll be doing

Your responsibilities will include:

- Preparing journals, accruals, prepayments and other period-end adjustments

- Preparing balance sheet and intercompany reconciliations and investigating discrepancies

- Assisting with period-end reporting and supporting workpapers

- Establishing and maintaining the fixed asset register

- Assisting with GST, payroll-related and other statutory reconciliations

- Supporting the day-to-day operation of the Finance team across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll

- Helping to monitor finance workflows and identify outstanding tasks or areas requiring follow-up

- Maintaining finance procedures and process documentation

- Maintaining the contract register and monitoring expiry dates, review periods and pricing anniversaries

- Assisting with financial analysis, pricing calculations and tenders as required

- Identifying opportunities to improve finance processes, systems and internal controls

- Providing accounting and technical support to other Finance team members as your knowledge and experience develop

- Assisting with finance projects and other continuous improvement initiatives

About you

We're looking for someone who has:

- A degree or diploma in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline, OR equivalent relevant experience

- At least 1–2 years' practical experience in an accounting or finance role

- Experience with journals, reconciliations and period-end processes

- A sound understanding of accounting principles and GST

- Good Excel skills and confidence in learning new systems

- Strong attention to detail and the ability to recognise when something doesn't look quite right

- A willingness to investigate discrepancies and understand their cause rather than simply correct the immediate problem

- The confidence to ask questions, contribute your thoughts and speak up when you notice something

- Positive communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a range of different people and personalities

- A willingness to share your knowledge and, over time, provide technical guidance to other members of the Finance team

CPA/CA qualification, current studies or an intention to commence will be highly regarded.

Experience supervising,

training or providing guidance to others would also be an advantage. This doesn't need to have been in an accounting role – we're interested in people who can communicate well, work with different personalities and earn the trust and respect of the people around them.

About us

SSX Group is a growing business based in Richmond. Our Finance team works closely together and with people across the broader business, so this isn't a role where you'll spend your days working through a task list in isolation.

We have a friendly, down-to-earth workplace culture, while maintaining a strong focus on high-quality work and contributing to the success of the business. We work closely across teams and value people who can build positive working relationships, communicate effectively and adapt to different personalities and working styles.

You'll work closely with the Finance Manager, particularly while you're learning the role and the business. You'll receive plenty of feedback and support, but you'll also be encouraged to take ownership of your responsibilities and develop the confidence to work autonomously.

As the business continues to grow, there will be plenty of opportunity for this role to grow as well. For the right person, we see this as a position in which you can broaden your technical knowledge, become increasingly involved across the Finance function and take on greater responsibility as your capability develops.

If you're looking for an Assistant Accountant role where you can build on the experience you already have and learn much more than your own small piece of the finance function, we'd like to hear from you.
