The Company
This is a business that grew faster than its systems did, and has decided to do something about it. What began as a single operation is now a group of them, sitting alongside a client base that leans on it for the parts of employing people most companies find hardest. Acquisitions, new entities and a long run of hiring have all landed inside a few short years. There is real momentum here, and a back end that has not caught up with it. They would rather fix that now than explain it to an auditor later.
Behind it sits private ownership with a long horizon, and the appetite to build properly rather than patch. Day to day it means something simpler. Every entity has its own awards, its own headcount and its own quirks, most of it held together by people rather than by the system. That is the gap this HRIS and Payroll Systems Specialist role exists to close.
The Role
Reporting to the executive who leads the people and compliance side of the business, this HRIS and Payroll Systems Specialist role owns the configuration, implementation and ongoing optimisation of the group's workforce management platform. Not for one company, but across every entity inside the group and for the external clients it advises. The platform is a contemporary cloud workforce management system, so if you have configured one of the majors you will be at home in it inside a fortnight.
The technical core of the job is award interpretation. Modern awards, award-free arrangements and Fair Work obligations have to become rules the system enforces on its own, so that timekeeping, breaks, overtime, allowances and penalties land correctly every cycle and the records hold up when somebody audits them. This is not a data entry seat and it is not a helpdesk. You are the person who decides how the thing gets built.
It is also client facing, which is not obvious from the title. You will sit in front of external businesses, run the workshops, explain your decisions and audit their compliance alongside the group's own. The role is based in the office five days a week, which is a deliberate choice here rather than an oversight, because the team works shoulder to shoulder and the client work runs through the building.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Configuring and maintaining the workforce management platform across multiple entities, so system structures reflect how each business actually operates
- Building out the backend, including employee profiles, classifications, pay conditions, award rules and entity level configuration
- Translating modern award provisions and award-free arrangements into system logic that holds up under the Fair Work Act
- Making sure timekeeping, breaks, overtime, allowances and penalties calculate correctly every cycle, with records that stay audit ready
- Running implementation work end to end, including data migration, cleansing, testing, validation and go live support
- Acting as the subject matter expert for internal teams and external clients, from day to day troubleshooting through to compliance questions
- Configuring onboarding, including employee setup, classification mapping and the tracking of training and compliance requirements
- Conducting HR, Fair Work and payroll compliance audits across client entities, identifying the risk and recommending the fix
- Finding the inefficiencies and compliance gaps nobody has had time to look at, then closing them
- Working across HR, payroll, compliance, finance and operations to produce the reporting and documentation leadership needs to make decisions
About You
You are the kind of HRIS and Payroll Systems Specialist who reads an award schedule the way other people read a map. You have configured a workforce or payroll system before and you know the difference between one that technically works and one that quietly overpays a whole cohort for eight months. You are happier owning a build than administering someone else's, you are comfortable being the only person in the room who understands how the rules translate into logic, and you can explain that to a client without making them feel slow.
You want scope, you want to be trusted with it, and you would rather be busy across several businesses than bored inside one.
Skills & Experience
To be effective as an HRIS and Payroll Systems Specialist, you will likely bring:
- Hands-on configuration experience with a modern workforce management or payroll platform, whether that is Deputy, Humanforce, UKG, Tanda, Kronos, RITEQ, Aurion, Preceda or something comparable
- Genuine award interpretation capability, meaning you can read a modern award and turn it into rules a system will enforce without supervision
- A working knowledge of the Fair Work Act and payroll compliance obligations, plus the instinct for where a business is quietly exposed
- Experience taking a system implementation or migration end to end, including data migration, testing, parallel runs and go live
- The communication skills to sit in front of a client, run a workshop and explain a system decision in plain English
- Comfort working autonomously across multiple entities with competing priorities and no two award environments the same
- Tertiary qualifications in human resources, business or a related field are well regarded, though demonstrated capability matters more
What's on Offer
This HRIS and Payroll Systems Specialist role offers:
- Scope you will not get in a single company payroll seat, spanning several entities and an external client base, each with a different award environment
- A direct line to the executive who owns this part of the business, with genuine exposure to clients and senior leadership from the first month
- The chance to own a system environment from configuration onward instead of inheriting somebody else's decisions and defending them
- A privately owned business where the systems work is visible, and a competitive package aligned to the experience you bring
