Apprentice Carpenter – Childcare Facilities Maintenance & ConstructionPosition Overview
We are seeking a motivated Apprentice Carpenter to join our team specialising in the maintenance, construction and refurbishment of childcare centres throughout New South Wales.
This is not a typical residential or commercial carpentry apprenticeship. Our work is highly varied and involves maintaining safe, compliant and functional environments for children, educators and families. No two days are the same, and apprentices are exposed to a wide range of construction and maintenance tasks across multiple trades.
Working alongside experienced tradespeople, you will develop practical carpentry skills while gaining experience in facility maintenance, playground construction and compliance works unique to the childcare industry.
What You'll Be Doing
Your day-to-day duties may include:
- Building timber decks, ramps and stairs.
- Constructing and repairing fences and gates.
- Installing compliant playground fencing and barriers.
- Building retaining walls and garden edging.
- General building maintenance and repairs.
- Replacing doors, locks and hardware.
- Installing skirting, architraves and internal fit-outs.
- Minor framing and structural repairs.
- Constructing storage units and custom joinery.
- Assisting with playground equipment installations.
- Softfall and playground maintenance.
- Landscaping and outdoor improvements.
- Lawn mowing, whipper snipping and general grounds maintenance.
- Pressure cleaning buildings and playground areas.
- Painting and finishing works.
- Assisting with compliance upgrades to meet Australian Standards.
- Using a wide variety of power tools and construction equipment.
- Maintaining vehicles, tools and equipment.
- Travelling to childcare centres across the region.
About the Role
Unlike traditional carpentry, this role combines construction, maintenance and compliance work.
You won't spend months working on one building site. Instead, you'll visit multiple childcare centres, solving different problems every day. One morning you may be repairing a playground fence, after lunch you could be building a new deck, and the following day installing gates, replacing doors, carrying out landscaping or completing safety upgrades.
The role requires flexibility, initiative and a willingness to learn many different skills.
What We're Looking For
The successful applicant will:
- Have a genuine interest in carpentry and construction.
- Be reliable, punctual and eager to learn.
- Have a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
- Enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Be physically fit and capable of manual labour.
- Take pride in producing high-quality work.
- Be able to follow instructions while also working independently.
- Have good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Hold (or be working towards obtaining) a White Card.
- Hold a current driver's licence or be working towards obtaining one.
What You'll Learn
During your apprenticeship you'll gain experience in:
- Carpentry and construction.
- Commercial maintenance.
- Playground and childcare compliance.
- Deck and fence construction.
- Concrete and footings.
- General building maintenance.
- Landscaping and external works.
- Safe use of construction tools and equipment.
- Reading plans and measuring accurately.
- Customer service and professional communication.
