Join Our Team as a First Nations Male Mentor at Saltbush in Tennant Creek!

Saltbush is seeking a passionate Male Mentor for the REAL Program to provide one-on-one and group support, delivering culturally safe, trauma-informed guidance that empowers First Nations participants to build skills, strengthen resilience, and create pathways to education, employment, and community reconnection.

Position Details:

- Employment Type: Part-time (0.5 FTE), Fixed Term (Until 30 June 2030)
- Location: Tennant Creek
- Excellent Remuneration: $80k - $85k pro rata + 12% super + salary packaging + 5 weeks annual leave
- Reporting to: REAL Program Manager
- Hours: Normal business hours, with flexibility for additional hours as needed
- Travel: This role is primarily based in Tennant Creek. Occasional travel may be required from time to time to support program delivery or attend organisational meetings

This position is identified for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8 (1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).

This position is only open to male applicants due to a genuine occupational qualification (GOQ) under Section 30 of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) and Section 35 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1992 (NT), as permitted by our contract for the Reconnection, Employment and Learning (REAL) Program to ensure culturally appropriate service delivery.

The Role: The Reconnection, Employment and Learning (REAL)



Program – Tracks to Tomorrow supports First Nations people aged 15 years and over as they transition from custody back into community, with a focus on reconnection, stability, education and employment pathways.

As a REAL Mentor, you will be a key point of connection for participants, providing culturally safe, trauma-informed mentoring and practical support across pre-release and post-release stages.

Working alongside participants, you will help identify goals, navigate barriers, build confidence and skills, reconnect with family, community and culture, and support pathways into education, training and employment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

To ensure success in your role as a Mentor you will:

- Build strong, trusting relationships with participants.
- Provide mentoring and support both pre-release and in the community.
- Support participants with transition planning, appointments, documentation and accessing services.
- Assist with work readiness, resumes, interviews and ongoing employment support.
- Support connection with family, community and culture in line with participant goals.
- Work closely with correctional facilities, service providers and the wider REAL team.
- Maintain accurate participant records, case notes and outcome reporting.
- Identify and appropriately escalate risk or safeguarding concerns.

Essential Selection Criteria:

We're looking for someone who:

- Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and can provide evidence of heritage.
- Has experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Can build genuine,



trusting relationships with people experiencing complex barriers.
- Understands culturally protected and trauma-informed approaches.
- Has strong communication, problem-solving and organisational skills.
- Is confident using Microsoft Office and learning new systems.
- Can work independently while contributing to a supportive team environment.
- Is willing to complete Saltbush's accredited 11055NAT Course in Mentoring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Mentors within the six-month probation period.

Highly Desirable Criteria:

- Lived experience of the justice system or strong community connections.
- Experience in employment, reintegration, youth or community services.
- Knowledge of the Northern Territory justice and parole systems.
- Local knowledge of Central Australia services.

Employment Requirements:

- National Police Clearance (no more than 3 months old)
- Valid NT OCHRE Card
- Current Unrestricted/Open Driver Licence
- Current First Aid Certificate
