What we are looking for:
The Senior Environmental Officer provides specialist environmental and cultural heritage advice to support the compliant operation of Council’s waste assets and waste‑related activities. You will lead environmental approvals, statutory reporting and continuous improvement of the directorate’s Environmental Management System, contributing to effective risk management and sustainable environmental performance across Water & Waste Services.
What your day will look like:
- Deliver specialist environmental and cultural heritage advice to ensure compliant operation of Council’s waste assets and waste‑related activities.
- Lead environmental approvals, statutory reporting and compliance activities, including incident response, monitoring and development of proactive documentation (TEPs, TELs).
- Drive strategic environmental planning through preparation of key documents, project management, procurement and contract oversight.
- Analyse, reconcile and report waste levy data to support legislative compliance, audits and accurate financial/waste management reporting.
- Identify and manage environmental risks, supporting the development and implementation of targeted improvement plans.

What you’ll need for success:
- Degree (AQF Level 7 or above) in environmental management, science, engineering or a related discipline.
- Senior‑level experience in environmental management, with detailed understanding of environmental legislation relevant to waste operations.
- Strong analytical and conceptual skills, with the ability to develop and communicate practical solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and provide technical support.
- High‑level written and verbal communication skills, including negotiation and stakeholder engagement capability.
- Proficiency with MS Office and geographic information systems such as MapInfo.
- Valid Class C or CA driver licence.
- Construction Industry Induction (White Card).
What’s nice to have:
- Postgraduate qualifications in an environmental field.
- Boat licence.
- Knowledge of water and sewage industry operations.
