Assistant Accountant
SMEC Power & Technology is seeking a capable and motivated Assistant Accountant to join our finance team in Bibra Lake.
This is a hands on finance role suited to someone who is degree qualified, developing their accounting career and looking to build experience across financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting and systems improvement.
The role will also support the business through its transition to Pronto, providing an excellent opportunity to be involved in finance process improvement, data integrity and ERP system development as the business continues to grow.

Our team designs, manufactures and supports electrical infrastructure including switchboards, substations, starter panels and related electrical products and services.

About the Role
Reporting to the Business Manager, the Assistant Accountant will support the finance function through accurate processing, review and reconciliation of financial information.
The successful candidate will work closely with the accounts team and develop a strong understanding of the finance function across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, month-end reporting, balance sheet reconciliations, financial controls, cashflow monitoring, budgeting, forecasting and systems improvement.
This role is suited to someone who enjoys being hands-on, is comfortable working across different areas of finance and wants to grow into a broader accounting role over time.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Support
- Assist with month-end reporting and preparation of supporting schedules.
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations.
- Assist with profit and loss reconciliations and variance analysis.
- Prepare and post journals, accruals and prepayments.
- Maintain fixed asset registers and depreciation schedules.
- Assist with BAS, IAS and other statutory reporting support.
- Support cashflow monitoring, forecasting and working capital reporting.
Accounts Payable, Receivable and Payroll Support
- Develop a solid working knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Assist with invoice processing, supplier queries, customer follow-up and reconciliations.
- Provide backup support to payroll when required.
- Assist with payroll reconciliations and related reporting.
- Support accurate coding of transactions across accounts, jobs, cost centres and projects.
- Assist the accounts team with day-to-day finance administration as required.
Financial Controls and Reconciliations
- Assist with bank reconciliations and other key control accounts.
- Review financial information for accuracy, completeness and correct coding.
- Identify and correct coding errors, misallocations and inconsistencies.
- Ensure supporting documentation is complete, accurate and audit-ready.
- Support compliance with internal policies, procedures and finance control requirements.
Systems and Process Improvement
- Assist with SMEC’s transition to Pronto.
- Support data integrity, system reconciliation and process improvement.
- Assist with integration between ERP, accounting and operational systems.
- Help improve finance workflows, reporting disciplines and administration processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement across the finance function.
Budgeting, Forecasting and Reporting
- Assist with annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
- Work with operational stakeholders to gather information and validate assumptions.
- Support variance analysis and management reporting.
- Assist with financial reporting packs, commentary and supporting schedules.
Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will have:

Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related discipline.
- Experience in an accounting, assistant accountant, finance officer or accounts role.
- Experience using accounting or ERP systems.
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel capability.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across departments.
Desirable
- Progress towards CA, CPA or IPA qualification, or a desire to commence professional accreditation.
- Experience in manufacturing, engineering, construction, mining services or project-based environments.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Pronto, MYOB, Ostendo or similar.
- Previous involvement in an ERP transition or systems implementation.
- Payroll backup or payroll reconciliation experience.
- Experience supporting month-end reporting, budgeting or forecasting.
