About the Role
The Exercise and Simulation Planner is a key position with Cubic Defence supporting the Fleet Lethality organisation, focused on advancing and integrating synthetic warfighting capabilities that support the Royal Australian Navy’s operational readiness. This role directly contributes to the Navy’s ability to train and operate effectively across single service, joint and international contexts by ensuring contemporary simulation technologies, methodologies and exercise design practices are employed.
Working with senior leadership and key Defence stakeholders, the Exercise and Simulation Planner will help enhance interoperability with joint and allied partners while supporting the strategic objectives of the Royal Australian Navy. The role requires a high degree of autonomy, expert judgment and initiative, with regular consultation and progress reporting across technical, operational and strategic workstreams.
Key Responsibilities
· Plan, design and support synthetic warfighting exercises that align with Fleet Lethality priorities and RAN training objectives.
· Integrate Live, Virtual and Constructive simulation approaches to deliver realistic, operationally relevant training outcomes.
· Analyse diverse technical, operational and strategic inputs to develop innovative exercise and simulation solutions.
· Engage with Navy, joint and allied stakeholders to support interoperability and continuous capability improvement.
· Provide expert advice on simulation technologies, methodologies, exercise design and training effectiveness.
· Support the preparation, conduct and review of exercise activities, including post-activity analysis and lessons learned.
· Report progress,
risks and recommendations to senior leadership and contribute to strategic planning discussions.
About You
You are an experienced planning, training or simulation professional with robust knowledge of Defence environments and maritime warfighting concepts. You are confident working with complex information, exercising sound judgment and translating operational requirements into effective synthetic training activities. You thrive in stakeholder-rich environments and can operate independently while maintaining alignment with senior leadership direction.
Essential Experience and Skills
· Experience in Defence, maritime operations, exercise planning, simulation, training development or a related field.
· Understanding of synthetic training environments and Live, Virtual and Constructive simulation concepts.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, including the ability to assess complex inputs and develop practical solutions.
· Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and briefing skills.
· Ability to operate with autonomy under general direction and manage competing priorities.
· Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence security clearance, if required.
