Are you a strong community connector?
The Riverina Murray Regional Alliance is seeking an experienced, motivated and community-focused Engagement Officer.
We are looking for someone who understands that meaningful community relationships are built through trust, consistency, listening, being present and following through on commitments.
This is a home-based position; however, regular travel across the Riverina Murray Regional Alliance footprint is an essential requirement of the role.
About RMRA
The Riverina Murray Regional Alliance is a regional Aboriginal governance body operating under the NSW Government’s Local Decision Making initiative.
RMRA works with Aboriginal communities, community-controlled organisations, local governance structures, government agencies and regional stakeholders to strengthen Aboriginal community voice, self-determination and regional decision-making.
RMRA is not a service provider. Our role is to listen to community, identify shared priorities, strengthen relationships, advocate for change and promote accountability to Aboriginal communities.
About the role
The Engagement Officer will work closely with the CEO, RMRA Delegates and Aboriginal communities across the Riverina Murray region.
This is not primarily a desk-based or administrative position. The successful applicant will be expected to travel throughout the RMRA footprint each month, spend meaningful time in community and build solid, respectful and trusted relationships with Aboriginal people, organisations, community leaders and governance structures.
The Engagement Officer will help ensure that community priorities,
concerns and lived experiences are heard, accurately recorded and reflected in RMRA’s advocacy, planning and engagement with government.
The role also provides practical support to the CEO across community visits, communications, project coordination, meetings, regional events, record keeping and reporting. These duties reflect RMRA’s existing requirement for the Engagement Officer to maintain community relationships, attend local governance meetings, coordinate projects and prepare updates and reports.
Key responsibilities
The Engagement Officer will:
- Plan and undertake regular face-to-face community visits across the RMRA footprint.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, ACCOs, local governance groups and stakeholders.
- Attend community meetings, forums, governance meetings and yarning sessions.
- Listen to, document and follow up community-raised issues and priorities.
- Maintain clear communication between RMRA, Delegates, communities and stakeholders.
- Support culturally safe community engagement and truth-testing activities.
- Coordinate community activities, meetings, projects and regional cultural gatherings.
- Prepare community updates, correspondence, meeting documents and draft reports.
- Maintain accurate engagement and project records.
- Provide regular activity updates to the CEO.
- Represent RMRA professionally in meetings and stakeholder engagements.
- Support implementation of RMRA’s Operational Plan, Strategic Plan and funding milestones.
RMRA’s current funding milestones specifically require scheduled visits across the regional footprint to hear local priorities, strengthen relationships and ensure its advocacy remains informed by community.
About you
You will have:
- Demonstrated experience engaging respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal communities.
- Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
- An understanding of Aboriginal community governance, cultural protocols and community-controlled ways of working.
- The ability to work independently from home while maintaining regular communication and accountability.
- Strong written communication, reporting, record-keeping and organisational skills.
- Experience coordinating meetings, community activities or projects.
- The ability to manage regular travel, competing priorities and reporting deadlines.
- Confidence representing an organisation at community and stakeholder meetings.
- A valid and current driver’s licence.
- Willingness and capacity to undertake regular regional travel.
Experience working with an Aboriginal organisation, regional alliance, ACCO, not-for-profit organisation or government-funded program will be highly regarded.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
Employment term
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for an initial period of 12 months.
