Job description:
We are seeking an enthusiastic Technical Assistant in Molecular Genetics to provide support for research and breeding projects focused on crop species important to Victoria's agricultural industries. Working as part of a team, the position is responsible for undertaking high-throughput laboratory activities, including DNA extraction, sample processing, genotyping and associated data management. The role contributes to the reliable generation of molecular data used in crop improvement programs and research projects involving cereals, pulses and oilseeds. Working under general supervision, the Technical Assistant will maintain accurate laboratory records, follow established protocols and quality standards, contribute to a safe laboratory environment, and work effectively as part of a collaborative team. The role requires a team-oriented mindset, strong oral and written communication skills and excellent attention to detail. The Technical Assistant will work under the general supervision of Research Scientist Ms Debbie Wong and will enjoy flexible working arrangements.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
- Excellent knowledge and experience in laboratory methods for genetics and genomics, with emphasis on next-generation DNA genotyping and sequencing technologies.
- Demonstrated experience and efficiency in a high sample throughput laboratory in which a range of molecular genetics and genomics techniques were applied, including the use of liquid handling robotics.
- Demonstrated ability to organise tasks and work across multiple activities in parallel to achieve high quality outcomes within agreed timelines.
- Strong attention to detail and record keeping skills, including experience in maintaining electronic databases.
This is a fixed term position available for a period of 24 months. The work location for this position is Bundoora.
