Our client Foodworks Warracknabeal is an independently owned and operated full-line supermarket servicing the township of Warracknabeal and the surrounding Yarriambiack Shire farming communities.
The store trades seven days per week and carries a full grocery, fresh produce, chilled, frozen, bakery, deli and general merchandise range.
The Retail Manager holds overall day-to-day operational responsibility for the store.
The position exists to plan, organise, direct, control and coordinate the retail operation so that sales and gross profit targets are met, stock and shrinkage are managed within budget, staff are effectively recruited, rostered, trained and supervised, and the business complies at all times with its obligations under food safety, work health and safety, liquor licensing (where applicable), consumer law and workplace relations legislation.
The role is a genuine, full-time, ongoing managerial position that carries decision-making authority over merchandising, ordering, pricing within supplier and banner parameters, staffing and budget performance.
It is not a shop-floor sales or customer service role.
Key Duties And Responsibilities:
Operational Planning and Business Management
Determining and implementing the store's operating and trading policies, procedures and standards, and communicating these to all staff.Planning and directing daily, weekly and seasonal store operations, including trading hours, departmental priorities, promotional cycles and public holiday and harvest-season trading patterns.Preparing and monitoring annual and periodic sales, gross profit, wage-cost and expense budgets, analysing performance against budget, and taking corrective action where variances arise.Analysing point-of-sale, scan and departmental sales data to identify trends in customer demand, product performance and margin, and adjusting range, space allocation and ordering accordingly.Preparing and reviewing management reports for the Directors on sales, margin, wage cost, shrinkage, stock levels and departmental profitability.
Merchandising, Purchasing and Stock Control
Determining the product mix and range to be stocked across grocery, fresh produce, chilled, frozen, bakery, deli and general merchandise, having regard to local customer demand and seasonality.Negotiating with, and maintaining relationships with, the FoodWorks banner group, wholesalers, direct suppliers and local growers regarding supply arrangements, promotional support, deals and delivery schedules.Authorising purchase orders, controlling inventory levels and reorder points, and ensuring stock is received, checked, invoiced and stored correctly.Setting and reviewing retail pricing and promotional pricing within banner and supplier parameters, and ensuring compliance with unit pricing and price display obligations under the Australian Consumer Law.Directing store layout, planogram compliance, shelf presentation, end-cap and promotional displays, ticketing and point-of-sale advertising material.Managing stock rotation, date coding, markdowns, wastage and returns; investigating and controlling shrinkage; and organising and reconciling periodic stocktakes.
Staff Management and Development
Recruiting, selecting, inducting and, where necessary, terminating store staff in consultation with the Directors.Preparing staff rosters to meet trading demand while managing wage cost as a percentage of sales, and approving leave and shift changes.Training, coaching, supervising and appraising employees in customer service, product knowledge, cash handling, food safety, manual handling and store procedures.Delegating duties to supervisors and department staff, setting performance expectations,
and managing underperformance and disciplinary matters in accordance with the applicable award and the Fair Work Act ****.Maintaining accurate employment records, timesheets and payroll inputs, and ensuring correct classification and payment of employees under the applicable industrial instrument.
Customer Service and Community Engagement
Setting and maintaining customer service standards across the store and leading by example on the shop floor during peak periods.Resolving escalated customer complaints, refund and product quality issues, and implementing preventative measures.Planning and coordinating local marketing, catalogue distribution, community sponsorship and in-store promotional activity appropriate to the Warracknabeal district.
Compliance, Safety and Risk
Ensuring compliance with the Food Act **** (Vic) and Food Standards Code, including temperature monitoring, cold-chain integrity, cleaning schedules, allergen labelling and the store food safety program.Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act **** (Vic), including hazard identification, incident reporting and investigation, safe manual handling, and contractor and plant safety.Ensuring compliance with liquor licensing and tobacco retailing obligations, including responsible service, age verification and signage requirements, where such products are sold.Managing cash handling, banking, till reconciliation, security, CCTV and loss prevention procedures.Overseeing maintenance of refrigeration, plant and equipment, and liaising with contractors and service providers.
Requirements:
An AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma (or recognised overseas equivalent); At least three (3) years of relevant managerial experience in a retail or supermarket environment in substitution for the formal qualification A minimum of 12 months relevant experienceDemonstrated experience managing a retail store or a major department, including responsibility for sales, gross profit and wage-cost performance.Demonstrated experience in purchasing, inventory control, stocktaking and shrinkage management.Demonstrated experience rostering, supervising, training and appraising a team of retail employees.Working knowledge of retail point-of-sale and stock management systems, and competence in Microsoft Office or equivalent.Sound written and verbal English communication skills sufficient to lead a team, deal with suppliers and resolve customer matters.Understanding of Australian food safety, work health and safety, and consumer law obligations as they apply to grocery retail (or demonstrated capacity to acquire the same within an agreed induction period).
Availability to work a rotating roster including weekends, evenings and public holidays as required by trading hours.
Desirable
Prior experience in an independent or banner-group supermarket (FoodWorks, IGA or similar).
Food Safety Supervisor certification and Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification, or willingness to obtain.Experience operating in a regional or rural community with a seasonal customer base.Current driver's licence.
