About the role
As a key financial partner to the Community Support Department, you will provide trusted financial advice, analysis and support to enable sound decision-making and the effective delivery of Council services to the community. With a strong background in commerce or accounting, you will support statutory financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, ensuring financial activities are accurate, timely and compliant with relevant legislation, Australian Accounting Standards and Council policies.
Working collaboratively with business units, senior staff and management, you will provide financial modelling and advice to support new initiatives, service delivery and funding decisions, while monitoring revenue and expenditure and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs and strengthen financial sustainability. You will also contribute to grant applications, financial acquittals, internal audit activities and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes.
A key focus of the role will be building financial capability across the department. You will work closely with Coordinators and Service Leads to strengthen their understanding and management of financial responsibilities, while supporting staff to build financial literacy and confidence in using financial systems. Through the annual budget and forecasting processes, you will provide practical financial insight that supports effective planning, informed decision-making and the delivery of quality services to the community.
What your day will look like
- Provide financial advice, support and training to Community Support business units.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling and reporting activities across the Department.
- Analyse actual, budget and forecast results, identifying variances and emerging financial issues.
- Provide advice on taxation, financial policies, legislation and compliance requirements.
- Liaise with the Finance Department to provide contextual financial advice and support.
- Monitor and communicate financial issues that may impact the operation and viability of services, programs and business units.
- Work with business units and senior staff to develop practical solutions to financial issues.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, providing a high level of customer service on financial matters.
What you will bring
- Completion of a tertiary qualification in Commerce/Accounting with some relevant experience or lesser formal qualifications with substantial relevant experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain technical terms in plain language and effectively prepare clear and concise reports.
- Knowledge of relevant Australian Taxation Office requirements and other legislation.
- Demonstrated capacity in the application of Microsoft Office with solid focus on excel and finance management information systems that collect and analyse data.
- Demonstrated experience in accounting with exposure to budgeting, forecasting, internal and external reporting, taxation, cash management and auditing.
- Proficient in the use of Tech One, and Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel.
- Understanding of local government and community-managed programs is desirable.
