An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Assistant Director to lead the development and implementation of cultural safety learning and capability initiatives.
This role will play a key part in building workforce capability and creating culturally safe environments that improve access to services and support better outcomes for First Nations peoples and communities.

About the Role
As Assistant Director, you will provide strategic leadership across cultural safety learning, capability development and stakeholder engagement. You will lead the design and implementation of learning initiatives, provide high-level advice to senior executives, and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve meaningful and equitable outcomes.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Lead the design, development and implementation of cultural safety learning programs and capability initiatives.
- Provide high-level strategic advice relating to cultural safety, learning and workforce capability.
- Prepare complex and high-quality briefs, submissions, reports and committee papers.
- Lead consultation, collaboration and genuine co-design with First Nations peoples, communities and organisations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders and strategic partners.
- Represent the organisation at high-level meetings, working groups and committees.
- Collaborate with HR, learning and development, and operational teams to align initiatives with workforce needs.
- Lead monitoring, evaluation and reporting activities, including milestones, risks and performance measures.
- Provide guidance, mentoring and leadership to team members and support a positive workplace culture.
- Champion organisational and cultural change through responsive, strengths-based approaches to learning and capability development.
About You
You will be an experienced leader with a strong understanding of cultural safety, learning and development, and workforce capability.
You will bring demonstrated experience working respectfully and effectively with First Nations peoples, communities and organisations.
You will have:
- Demonstrated experience building trusted relationships and working through genuine partnership and co-design.
- Robust expertise in instructional design, adult learning and training development.
- Experience leading complex learning, training and workplace capability initiatives.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to develop evidence-based recommendations.
- Experience leading teams, managing resources, setting priorities and delivering outcomes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of high-quality briefs and reports.
- Strong risk and change management capability.
- An understanding of First Nations cultures, histories, perspectives and community engagement approaches.
- Knowledge of Commonwealth policy development processes, legislation and government frameworks.
- Understanding of strategic planning, governance, performance monitoring and project management.
- The ability to use evidence, research and data to inform strategic decision-making.
Desirable Experience and Qualifications
The following would be highly regarded:
- Experience working with First Nations peoples, communities and/or organisations.
- Qualifications in education, training, human resources or a related discipline.
- Experience leading or contributing to training design and delivery, particularly within First Nations policy or service delivery environments.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122 or equivalent).
- Tertiary qualifications in public policy, social sciences, law,
Indigenous studies or a related field.
