PONTIANAK, thekabarnews.com —The Pontianak City Administration is reorganizing Parit Tokaya, a major drainage canal in West Kalimantan’s provincial capital. The goal is to restore water flow and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall and high tides.

The project includes clearing accumulated waste, dredging sediment, assessing bridges that restrict water movement and enforcing canal-bank setback rules.

The city will dismantle several bridges that obstruct water flow and redesign others to improve drainage and provide easier access for maintenance equipment.

Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono announced the measures while inspecting the project on Friday, August 7. He said Parit Tokaya required particular attention because it is a primary drainage channel serving a relatively large catchment area.

“There are several bridges that we will dismantle. This means that when it rains, there will be no obstruction, and both the water and our amphibious equipment will be able to pass through for routine maintenance,” Edi said.

The city has not yet disclosed the number of bridges affected, the project’s total budget or its expected completion date.

Parit Tokaya carries runoff from parts of South Pontianak toward the city’s larger waterways.

In 2022, the municipal government described it as one of the district’s most vital canals.



They also said surrounding areas were prone to standing water when heavy rain coincided with high tides.

Weather records also confirm the city’s broader flood risk. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) West Kalimantan office said 154 millimeters of rain fell in one day during the widespread flooding on March 27, 2024. This amount is classified as extreme rainfall. The flooding inundated roads, homes and government buildings, according to BMKG West Kalimantan.

Pontianak’s Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency has previously carried out routine maintenance at Parit Tokaya and other drainage points. They used municipal budget funds for these efforts.

The agency said leaves and plastic waste can obstruct channels and create localized flooding. This fact reinforces the need for regular cleaning and community participation.

Its March 2024 maintenance program specifically included Parit Tokaya, Sungai Jawi, Ampera Street and Berdikari Street. This information comes from the Pontianak Public Works Department.

Alongside the engineering work, the city plans to install more waste bins. They aim to improve the management of areas along the canal.

Edi said infrastructure upgrades would have limited impact if household and commercial waste continued entering the waterway.





“We hope Pontianak residents will work together to protect the city and prevent its drainage canals from failing because of waste,” he said.

The Parit Tokaya initiative forms part of Pontianak’s broader flood-management strategy. This strategy includes drainage repairs, canal normalization, pumping systems and coordination with provincial and national authorities.

The Pontianak administration has also emphasized that successful maintenance will depend on sustained waste control and public compliance. In their view, construction work alone is not enough.
