With a strong focus on developing its people and building capability for the future, this is an opportunity to take responsibility for a key growing function within an established horticultural operation.
The Role
This is a hands-on technical and leadership position spanning crop health, irrigation, fertigation, pest and disease management, team coordination and continuous improvement. You will work closely with other nursery departments while providing technical guidance and maintaining strong growing, safety and reporting standards.
- Manage crops from production through to dispatch, ensuring quality and timing specifications are achieved
- Develop and manage irrigation, fertigation, nutrition and moisture programs in response to crop and climatic conditions.
- Conduct regular crop scouting and implement appropriate pest and disease management programs
- Lead daily nursery activities, growing team priorities, work allocation and rosters
- Coordinate with sowing, dispatch and other departments to meet production and customer requirements
- Conduct product and crop trials, analyse results and provide recommendations to senior management
- Maintain growing records, SOPs, JSAs and departmental reporting while upholding nursery hygiene and safety standards
About You
You will be an experienced horticultural professional who combines sound crop knowledge with the ability to lead from the nursery floor. You will be comfortable making day-to-day growing decisions, setting priorities and supporting others while maintaining close attention to crop health,
quality and production requirements.
A practical leadership style is particularly important. The business operates with a hands-on culture and is looking for someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities while working constructively with the wider team.
- Tertiary qualification in horticulture, agricultural science or a related discipline
- Sound practical experience within horticulture, nursery or comparable crop production
- Strong knowledge of irrigation, plant nutrition, fertigation, pest and disease management
- Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, train and coordinate growing staff
- Strong planning, organisation and problem-solving capability in a commercial production environment
- Intermediate computer skills and the ability to maintain accurate operational records and reports
- Current driver’s licence and chemical user’s certificate
Experience with computerised or automated irrigation systems will be highly regarded, particularly Priva. A Forklift Licence is also desirable.
